Mel-o-drama.....
Ok Mel Gibson, said some unwise things concerning the Jewish people. There was a lot of truth to "some" of what he was saying, wrapped in a cocoon of ignorant babble. Ok he said it, he apoligise, let's move on, it was not that earth shattering. It was not that big a deal, you don't have to go get every jew in the entertainment industry to voice their fucking opinion... Fuck you, leave the guy alone, he, I think just voiced a vague shadow opinion that most non-jewish people hold deep in the back of their minds. I know that that is irrational, but and this is America where you are allowed to voice an opinion not matter if it's politically correct or not. I still love and respect him for his work as an actor and a director and in now way what he has said ment that much to me personally. They pulled the "holocaust" series, eh, so what, if you really want to see that shit go watch "Shindlers list".

Would I feel any different if he had said that black people cause all the ills of the world? hmmmmmm....
I remember many years ago when this was a general thought that pevailed among most people, even among some blacks.

Hi.
As a Jew I should take offense. I'm not. I am, however, a bit disappointed. I'll get over it. Look, shit happens. People say the wierdest things (under the infl) for good or ill. I too love Mel. He is a great actor. I understand that he is also a bit of a sexist. Okay, for that I will have to kick him in the balls. But its only hearsay so I let it pass.
I'm a female and have said shit about females (under the infl of course). Just get over it. He knows he was a bad boy and bless his heart for making amends and working on his "problem". There's more important shit happening right now than to focus on this. It happened, its over, and thank G-O-D, no one got hurt or worse.
Peace, Shalom, and XOXO,

I have no problem with Mel. The guy was drunk, he opened his mouth inserted his foot and got caught...it's something many of us can relate to. I don't agree with what he said but in the overall scheme of things his opinion is not that important to me. The guy's work is. And his body of work speaks with 100x more authority than his one night, I'm drunk and pissed off for getting caught rant.
I think ABC over-reacted by cancelling his mini-series...and in fact some of the over the top reactions are worse than anything he said or did. It has the effect of stifiling free speech, even if it's drunken free speech. So if I draw this out I consider ABC's reaction to be un-American and if there's any group I think deserves a backlash from this it's ABC and the House of Mouse that backed that decision.

I don't think this is in the past at all. But you have to be Bill Cosby to say it out loud, and look how much shit he caught.Rabbi Dali Rick wrote:I remember many years ago when this was a general thought that pevailed among most people, even among some blacks.
As for Mel, his very survival in the entertainment industry is the proof that "the Jews" don't run Hollywood.
I do think that if he had made the similar comments about black people, we wouldn't be hearing from him for a long time. Why do suppose that might be?
BTW, why do you call yourself Rabbi? Are you one?
Regarding your poll options, they are not contradictory, but I can't choose both, so I chose the first. If he wants to give to Jewish aid organizations supporting the hundreds of thousand of Israelis forced to live in bomb shelters, that would impress me enough to change my vote. Anyone can say they're sorry . . .

Don't worry folks his troubles won't be as bad as Peewee Herman's black listing for yanking his crank at a porno movie!
But really he should have said it in Aramaic!
"Are you a Jew!" is going to be a hot line for sometime!

I agree. He was drunk, he acknowledged it, he apologized and he's trying to make up for it. Cut the guy some slack.
But I have a lot more issues with him than just drunken blather. He has a house around here and everyone makes a big deal about the "local celebrity," but I still won't go see his movies.

Interesting enough, I have posted similar threads on other (mainstream) boards, and even the thought of asking to just let it go gets a thread locked and all the posts deleted. Especially if the posters start agreeing and saying outloud that it really is no big deal. I mean in one case I got a warning for breeching an unmentionable topic. When did the act of forgiving an indescretion and seeing past a persons faults become so vile a subject as to warrent a warning. They were vehimately opposed to any talk other than Mels utter beat-down was allowed. Even on a Startrek board a board that squeals about IDIC was pretty much against the idea. Yet here we can openly yell, curse and debate and what not with no adverse reaction. Is my spidey senses tingling at the though them controlling all mainstream media? Where's my aluminum foil yameka.

rabbi, the media has to have something to hyper-ventilate about something.
personally, i think Mr. Gibson fucked up about the time he said... "i'm okay to drive?" and the second time was when he lost his cool. humility properly applied can de-fuse an explosive situation.
i'm glad there was no accident, no injuries, etc...
the lesson to me is... know when to stop drinking or know when to call a cab.
IMHO
ETA: i am glad i drink at bars that will drive me home or buy me a cab if i stay too long. you would think those that can afford it would do the same.

As far as indiscretions go, I'm all for second chances. But what's an indiscretion? I think humping in the closet at a party is indiscreet. I think showing off your new pistol around the children is indiscreet. And I think bragging about your high income is indiscreet. But howling your hatred for Jews at the officer who's arresting you for DUI goes a bit further than indiscretion. That behavior, to quote Mr. Gibson himself, is purely despicable and should carry a penalty. Anything short of condemnation would effectively condone it.
I just don't think my attitude toward Gibson would be any better if he had managed to be a discreet Jew hater. If I hated black people, should I be forgiven if I were discreet? In fact, I'm convinced that discreet race hatred is the norm nowadays.
Old, bad joke: Definition of a nigger: a black person who just left the room.
"Go back to Africa, you black bastard! Oops, I'm sorry. That was indiscreet. No hard feelings, okay?"
Kinda rings false, doesn't it?

SED, the AP articles I read stated that the sheriff's deputy is Jewish, he admitted that when questioned by the press. Better yet here's a cite:I didn't know the officer was Jewish. How do you know that, and what makes you think he provoked the response? Is having a Jewish surname a provocation?
http://tinyurl.com/nxvwn
>>The pages that were set aside included the deputy's account of Gibson trying to escape arrest and then allegedly threatening to "get even" with him. In the pages, the deputy, who is Jewish, reported that Gibson made a statement blaming Jews for "all the wars in the world" and then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"<<

I'm on SED's side on this.
Mel Gibson has been a hate filled ass for decades- I first started disliking him in the late 80's/ early 90's when he went on an anti-gay tirade in a Spanish magazine ('"They take it up the ass," Gibson told El Pais as he got out of his chair, bent over and pointed to his butt. "This is only for taking a shit"' if you don't remember this bit of Gibsonian charm)
Plenty of people don't like gays, but for a "celebrity" to spew out hatred unchecked just encourages people like the recent Seattle shooter. What sort of tirades do you think that guy was listening to when he got his gun & decided to kill some Jews? It certainly wasn't some PC lecture.
I'm not saying we should all be nicey nicey and PC, but if you're a celebrity and the world discovers your ugly side, I see no reason you should be treated any different than a co-worker or friend who spews a racist or sexist rant. Would that be a person you would want to hang out with? Rebbi Dick- if someone you work with made racist remarks would you let them pass saying there are more important things in the world to worry about, or would you be affected by them, and possibly alter the way you deal with that person?
Gibson's actions will speak louder than any apology he could ever offer- but you still couldn't make me watch one of his movies.

Racism isn't that big a deal. There are good people and bad people.
One can't get to know everyone that one meets. We often make a snap judgment and pidgeonhole them. If they're the same race, it's not called anything. If they're a different race,,,it's called racism. It's mostly laziness and a closed mind.
The truth is that we judge everyone.
Judging someone without getting to know who they truly are is unfair. Life is pretty unfair much of the time anyway. It's just one more facet.
When someone screams out "honky" or "pendejo" or something else at me,,,I just go on about my business and don't give it any mind.
You can rail and scream against the hand that life has dealt you.
You can work with what you've got and show people that you're a good human being.
Complaining about one's life never endeared anyone to a person.
Some people can let it go by,,,some people won't.
I've never heard anyone complain if I said "Paddy wagon" or "rice grinder"

I'll remember that next time I'm listening to the news and they mention, oh, any one of the tens of thousands of racially based murders every year in the world. Just because you live safe & complacent doesn't mean everyone else on the planet does. How many race-based wars have happened in just the past few decades? Rwanda, Uganda, Israel/Palestine, Bosnia, Serbia, Kashmir..... not to mention numerous race based killings in the good ol' US.
You're right though- everyone does judge. I am fully aware that I do, and I am also aware that I do my damndest to make sure I'm not letting those judgements lead me down a path to stupidity. The difference is that a real deep-seated racist tends to act on those judgements, as do religious fundamentalists and all stripes of zealots. Anyone who spews things like that when drunk has got some hard-core issues, and I certainly wouldn't want to be alone in a Schul with them.
There is also a big difference between calling someone on their own words and "complaining about one's life" or railing and screaming. I'm simply saying that I think Mel Gibson is a hate-filled gasbag and always has been. It's just nice to see his own words come back to haunt him. YMMV.
and I'm done.
Next topic?

Seriously, I read the quotes of Gibby's spew. What the hell kind of truth are you talking about, Rick? I'm sorry, but you seem to be letting this incident validate some shitty "vague shadow opinion" that you have going on.
The guy was a drunken, blathering asshole who resisted arrest after endangering himself and others. In the middle of that, he let loose a lot of arrogant threats and anti-semitic bullshit. Deserving of his rights as we all are, sure, but not my top candidate for any kind of "leaving alone".
By all accounts, that Jewish deputy has been nothing but commendable.
From the NY Daily News:
“I don’t take pride in hurting Mr. Gibson,” said Mee, a 17-year deputy, who is Jewish. “What I had hoped out of this is that he would think twice before he gets behind the wheel of a car and was drinking.”
(link: http://www.nydailynews.com//front/story ... 0438c.html)
No, we don't know the whole story. But I'd be willing to bet that Deputy Mee didn't provoke, or need to provoke, shit.
For the record, I still have my Road Warrior fridge magnet, and it ain't going anywhere.
Poor Mel.
Now after his little mishap, more skeletons are peeking out of the closet. Seems as though he's been a very naughty boy. People are bringing up things he's said in the past (sober!). I just read an article written by some puritanical geek that is focusing the attention on Mel being at the bar talking to "the ladies". Please. See, Mel is married with 7 kids!
Okay, accidents happen for a reason. He is learning the hard way the error of his ways; for good or ill. (Thanks HST, I love that saying). Maybe now he will be more nicer.

Slam him into jail for a year to think about the drunken driving.
HIs racism and homophobia is abhorent. And potentially deadly. But having lost my two biggest loves to people behind the wheel who'd been drinking, I think that's actually a problem that can be tackled by unsubtle means.
Growing up in this country means that in all sorts of subtle ways I function as a racist. I seem to have got out of the idiological racism, by the grace of the world showing me I was a twit and some hard work. Racism is a f*cking scar on all our psyches, and I wish I knew how to get rid of it. But it takes a hell of a lot more than a primative punishment model to change those attitudes.

Never said to go easy on him. Yes, he got drunk, got behind the wheel and said a bunch of insulting things to the arresting officer — I'll bet a hundred that there were at least two other instances of that happening with non-celebs at the crux in other parts of L.A. alone that same night. Heck, yeah, let him fester in jail for a year like everyone else who drives drunk, then let him do his community service and detox schtuph.
Keep in mind that just a month ago, an idiot kid who had her license for six months and fast car for a week killed the Tongan royal family heirs while racing on Highway 101 through Palo Alto, and she hadn't touched a drop.
Keep in mind that Lebanon is getting torn apart by Israel over three of its soldiers being captured.
Keep in mind that Bush sentenced tens of millions of people in this country alone to slow, painful, humiliating deaths for the sake of 40,000 frozen embyros. LiveSTRONG and the various Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes and other medical affliction societies are good but they can't raise the hundreds of millions needed for research which is hamstrung anyway.
My main point was to censure him and move on since we have bigger things to break a sweat over.

No, I consider both sides in that conflict to be assholes and the civilians are getting the thin end of the stick. You can have your fish anyway you want, but I personally believe that frying is an unhealthy over reaction. It's bad for the heart and all that splattering grease usually falls on the kids. Sushi, on the other hand, is unkosher, so we must work to find a middle ground. Perhaps poaching or broiling--something that considers the needs and feelings of not just we two, but those of the fish itself. Maybe plonking is the solution. I don't know how it would be for a fish, but it didn't bother me at all.diane o'thirst wrote: I have bigger fish to fry.

Unfortunately for the Israelis and the Arabs, they can't simply plonk one another. They have to deal with real problems, which can make an asshole out of anyone. I know for a fact that most Israelis really don't want to be assholes. The Arabs in question, on the other hand, seem to enjoy it, as though it could somehow get them into heaven or anywhere else, like Jerusalem. They are certainly not concerned with life on earth.
It seems entirely possible to plonk Mel Gibson, however. At this point in his career he might even appreciate it. It's clear that he can't make himself shut up, and the charitible view on his recent behavior seems to be that he is crying out for help.
We have to rally around Mel in his hour of need.

Re: ................. "ARE YOU JEWISH"............
i'm with you rebbi pretty soon all mels in the world will start cranking up the gas chambers because every one says, well he was drunk!Rabbi Dali Rick wrote:Interesting enough, I have posted similar threads on other (mainstream) boards, and even the thought of asking to just let it go gets a thread locked and all the posts deleted. Where's my aluminum foil yameka.
the rebbi
I knew that Mel was anti-semite right from the fucking moment he made a fucking christ movie.
AIIZ
PS- humor about Hitler is not directed to the Jews which of course most of you knew, except Joel. It was directed to the Nazis and their Neo-bastarts by my statement at the end, "You're fucked Nazis!
I find it ironic that all the time they were murdering Jews their glorious leader was a Jew!
So never underestimate the power of the Jews!
Especially the Genuis of the Three Stooges!
