Well keeping it hard should be no problem.

And cold? All the cold shoulders he's going to get should drop that cash to 0 Kelvin... ;)

Haven't you learned from your experience with me?? Why are you taking on the role of self appointed MEAN policeman? Why are you continually so nasty to people on here? I mean, jeeze, it's starting to look like you're the TROLL! A troll is a person who sits under a bridge and throws rocks at people.

Wrong may not be the word I'd use but I could think of lots of others. Being the troll under the bridge means fewer folk walk across the path. It also means those who do tend to be of the type that don't mind rocks being thrown, and maybe even carry some of their own. It also encourages those troll to look for targets and the world is full of what one looks for. Personally I like to meet all kind of folk as I cross these bridges and when some small troll under the bridge discourages all but other small trolls from crossing I find it bothersome.

But again, that's just me. For myself, if a digital photographer will do, drop me a line. In the face of a crowd of cold shoulders I tend to offer some respite from the chill.

Capjbadger is not doing anything different than quite a few of us do. This is an online community and if we see something that violates the community guidelines or the TOS we speak up. It's also like a community sandbox and if someone wants to come along and take a shit in the middle of it like Tony's post did...there's going to be a backlash. I'd be more concerned if nobody spoke up vs. what's been posted so far.

Here's the thing though... While this is a community and there are guidelines that we want people to follow, not EVERYONE in the larger Burning Man community is a regular user of ePlaya... So while it IS appropriate to reply to the post and say "Hey, this is considered commerce, and you really shouldn't be posting this here" it's really not appropriate to start slamming people right out of the gate with insults and name calling before they've even had a chance to right their wrong.

And it looks just as silly and small when the rest of you do it as well. Saying, "You might not have known this but such posts violate the commerce section of the TOS," takes up just about as much space as throwing some insults around. Doing so makes it look like you care about the community. Throwing insults around makes it look like you're throwing shit into the sandbox, to use your analogy.

See, the thing you're failing to realized is that your "defense," of the community is both more bothersome, and more damaging to the community, than the thing you're defending against. You're making a sandbox that disproportionately appeals to little trolls, rather than to folk who go to burningman. That's not defending anything, that's creating a small space when you could have a community.

Wonderful. But part of growing up is realizing that how one does something is as important as what one does and why one does it. There's lots of ways you can stand up for the community without simultaneously dragging it down to Jr. High level, don't you think?

After being on the board for 7 years plus now, you get a little bit jaded. You also get experience in learning what's the most effective way to get the shit out of the sandbox and prevent repeats.

It sucks being negative. It's no fun at all. But in some cases it works and it's one of the most effective tools available. If people have a better way don't just get on the soapbox get in here and post when you see something that's not right and show us by example that there's a better way. If it keeps things in check people will run with it. If not the community will toss it.

WTF - why? and I ask this seriously, why do you think you have the right to tell anyone on this board what is appropriate?

It seems that you must be a full drawer of socks.

The majority of your posts are bitch sessions about how people act on this board. Please either accept it or leave. You are boring this lurker to fucking death.

First: Smash, it's not like there was a missed opportunity for education. The OP knew FULL WELL that what he was doing was in violation of our community standards; he said so himself. He knew he was going to get flamed for it, and did it anyway. There's no point in defending him.

Second: iamtonynyc: I will gladly photograph your project for free. I'm an amateur and intend to remain that way, but I'm quite good. My equipment isn't all that sophisticated, but I do a lot with what I've got. There are probably plenty of other photogs, professional and otherwise, out there who would shoot your project just for the asking. Why not go that route first before commodifying your art and their skills?

Ummm Smash, I wasn't mean at all. Did you see the guy's post? He flat out said "I'm selling something here. Nyah nyah nyah!". He knew that it was against the rules here (wan't even a grey area this time ;) ), and taunted the board about it. *shrug* Nasty? *chuckle* Nasty would of made what I posted to you look like a a friendly pep talk.

If that's not a troll, I don't know what is. Me saying he was a dumb troll wasn't mean, it was me shaking my head at someone being so pathetic that they felt need need to go beat on a bee hive with a stick just for the attention. I reported it and responded.

If I see something going on that wrong, I'm going to say something. If I see something good I give kudos and encouragement to that person. I feel kinda bad that you have me pegged so incorrectly. But thus is the failing of text only communication. I hope you'll see the actual person once you meet him face to face. :)

Actually after seven plus years you get what you want to be and what you allow yourself to be, K. If you're behaving in a way that sucks and is no fun at all, I'd suggest changing your behavior. You'll probably find daily life much more enjoyable, I'd think.

As for the effectiveness of being negative, I think if you really consider that for a while you might change your mind. "You get more flies with sugar than with vinegar," is a bit of wisdom my grandmother passed along to me that seems pretty accurate. Just to consider. And I think we all know the best way to deal with a true troll is simple silence, not via negativity, insults, and derision. In fact, all of those are simply fuel to the fire, eh?

At root, we're all doing the same thing. Trying to create the space we'd like to hang out in. I agree that blatantly commercial posts are a pain in the ass. Just like standing folk blocking the view at the burning of the man is. But, as SED pointed out in that thread, the folk yelling, "Sit the fuck down," cause more disturbance than those standing. And the ones who can't disagree, or point out a violation of the TOS, without adding childish insults do just the same over here, IMHO.

And, finally, you might find that "example," you're looking for quite close at hand. We all have our windmills and causes that inspire action. For some it's commercial posts, for others it's overzealous negativity....

And that's just what Smash is doing. Furthermore she's doing it without insults and derision. Kudos to her (and you in your responses to her) for that. :)

It's also a result of those insults, seems to me. It's not all the medium...

You know what Ron...

I don't care what you think about how happy or not I am with my life. I was having a conversation with Smash, and you seem to feel the need to continue to butt in and harp on me. Enough.

I'll continue to respect your right to give advice, while you respect my right to be happy with who I already am.

Smash I will talk with because she appears to have an open mind.

You I may talk with if you feel like you're done talking down to me like I'm your kid or something.

That's cool, 'cause I wasn't talking to you. If you re-read the thread I think you'll notice that it was K who said being negative was hard and it was to K my comment was addressed. That's why I used his handle in the sentence you're referring to.

In fact, I could say I was having a conversation with K and you seem to feel the need to continue to butt in and make judgments about me. If I wanted to. ;) But I tend not to see exchanges on a public board as private conversations anyone can butt into.

As for how you feel when you read my words, that's up to you. But you might want to actually read them well enough to understand them before you form those feelings and opinions about me. Or not, it's up to you.

HAHAHAHAHA... OK, egg on my face big time. I completely misread that line. I thought you were talking to me, and the "K" was you just shortening "OK". Pretty common on IMs. Very sorry man. Was feeling rather prickely since it seemed like you kept bagging on me lately and that this was just the latest.

Makes sense now why I couldn't figure out what this "example" was that you were talking about. :)

I would be happy to make the photographs for you. I have done fine art photography and photographed art work for over 15 years. My day rate is $1500 per day, plus expenses. I will also have sole copyright to the photographs per my release form. How about it?
