Should the guy get a break, or what?
Why? I mean, WHY??

I heard him say "It's NOT your fault" one evening when he got pulled over by a Ranger. He even had the audacity to ask "Are you a NEW person? Do you know who I am?"

I mean...it should seem obvious. David is a hater. He doesn't represent the NEW Burningman spirit.

Let's not mention the "Sugar Tits" comment he threw out at Isotopia. I mean really, IT'S NOT HER FAULT!

So true Bambi. So true.

Isotopia is currently consulting with her attorneys and negotiating with Barbara Walters over this unseemly and totally unprovoked incident.

Dear silly Geekester. Isotopia is Ladies Night.

Without her as an archetype all those DPW rag drag performances are only so much wasted make-up.

Unfortunately, I she won't be making it this year. She'll be driving across country with me as I plan my escape from this special little hell called Tennesee. She will be on the playa this year although not the week before (or after). This year is her 'Down Low' tour at Black Rock City. Still, you should be as scared as always.

You've been warned.

my david best story...

he and i were standing somewhere, nonchlantly discussing the entire v olume of discraded bicycles.... i suggested cutting them week by week into usable lengths of steel, steering asemblies, cranks and wheels... he responded about acually charging peole to come to the desert and doing it for money paid to the LLC.

i had quite an awakening at that moment..

Wow, Joel ... that would make for some awesome material for an art project ... made entirely from materials obtained from leftover playa bikes. Might even get some magnesium out of it too.

But holy crap, imagine the contraption you could build with all those sprockets, chains, bearings, wheels, innertubes.

So if I read this right we have an artist that built or at least burnished his reputation on his work at Burning Man that in reality could give a flying fuck less about the event or it's participants?

If that's the case it really makes me wish that Borg 2 would have experienced much greater success than it did and brought more small scale art to the playa. The temples are beautiful but I'm starting to have regrets that I had any participation with them...and the inadvertant feeding of what appears to be a serious ego problem.

i just figured if you had an old electric hacksaw, you could cut all the steel tubing into uniform lengths... on and on and on... just a thought.

Plant them in the playa )over rebar) and put nice tops on them. Invite participants to decorate. or Use them as rollers for anew kind of art car.

Are bikes made of steel?

Anyway, I was thinking of something along the lines of "the machine" from last year.... only smaller ... just this huge contraption of gears and sprockets and belts and wheels that you can turn a handle and the entire thing goes crazy with all different kinds of motion. Interactive ... but a bitch to dispose of after the event.

That's why Gawd gave us Thermite!!!

(Would be a great idea! The secondary "art" would involve the spectators who suddenly shout "HEY! THAT WAS MY BIKE!")

I have heard this from a lot of people. Mr. Best seems to forget that Burningman made him. Not the other way around.

If hes so damn hot, perhaps he doesnt need the grants BM gives him like clockwork. That oughta humble him a bit,

dont have the source, but heard the temple is going to be transitioned off into a community based approach - in other words, in someone else's hands where he wont be involved.

have no idea, but i am wondering how his seat on the braf will affect things after the article that mentioned a conflict of interest.

Sheesh, people treat the temple like it's a mandatory thing to have on the playa anymore. I like the temple as much as anyone and this year it was especially cathartic to have it there. But if David Best's work along with his attitude was to never step foot on the Black Rock again it's not the end of the world. In fact after one year of going without a temple maybe someone else would step up and build something that could give us a different vision than the temples we've seen to date.

Personally I think that the money spent on the temples would be better served in the hands of the new director of BRAC who has the potential to do some very good things. It would also bring someone's increasingly expanding ego back to reality too. Heck maybe we could tie this in somehow to next year's theme....after all one of the historical strong points prior to shrub being in office was the separation of church and state. Maybe it's time that the Republic of Black Rock divests itself of it's "church"!

Best's Temple was really great and I was happy it was there...but oddly enough, my favorite temple of my three burns was 2005. It was intimate, had more surface area to explore, yet it had shelter overhead too....

Maybe Best, like many many other artists, doesnt have great inter-personal skills, but other than those unfortunate to camp near his air horn, or overhear untoward comments, his attitude effects about .001% of the population, while his Temples inspire almost everyone on the Playa and off.

Kinetic v,

Love your analogy in which Best’s temple is the church to BRC LLC’s state.

Here’s some food for thought, buttressing the argument that Best’s temples are favored in a trade-off that sacrificse the ability of “smallerâ€
