need playa bike

Post by antechrist » Thu Aug 10, 2006 3:03 pm

Hey, I wore my feet down to nubs last time without a bike and I need to have one this year, but I am flying in. I could pick one up in Reno, but I will be in a small rental car and would have problems. I have two ideas that fellow burners could help me with that would be mutually advantageous.

1 Some burner who is driving and has space, pick me up a bike. I will pay for it. Nothing fancy, a $30 goodwill special is just fine. At the end of the event I let you keep it for your trouble.

2 Some burner who has an extra bike. Bring it and I can rent it or we can come to some mutually satisfactory exchange of some kind.

To all the helpful people that will point me to rental bikes offered on this list from last month. I have already checked with those people and they are Sold Out! Any other suggestions that don't involve me duct taping a bike to the roof of the rental I'd love to hear.

Thanks
Brian

There are people who sell them in Gerlach. I don't know if/when they sell out but I saw a bunch of them.

Ante, pm me. I have a couple of extra and I'll bring them out. I'll be very easy to find out there.

So you're looking to get a POS bike (or have someone get it for you) and then abandon it on the playa?

If you really are not able to take it back with you, then don't take it out to begin with!!!

It's not impossible to get a bike using a rental car. It's a bit of work, but that's part of the deal. If you're unable to pack a spare blanket or old comforter, go buy one at some big box store in Reno once you pick up your vehicle. Then get some clothesline. Both can be had for very little money. Put the blanket on the roof of the car, then the bike on the blanket. Tie your bike securely to the roof of the vehicle. Bring the bike in, then bring the bike out.

Look up a Goodwill dropoff point in Reno, you can unload the items you won't be needing to take back with you on the plane and help others all at once.

I saw way too many abandoned bikes last year to not be a bit of a jerk about people who treat them as throwaways. I also heard from one of the bike charities that only a fraction of the bikes abandoned on the playa could even be hauled back and put to good use. I think the total was between 500 and 1000 bikes, but there were far more than that left lying on the dust. If people could at least get them as far as a Reno dropoff point, then they could at least be put to use somehow.
