Speaking of fucking bikes, I'm not sure what to get, a mountain bike or city/comfort bike. I wish I knew what the SF bike commuters used out there.
Hiya K2,

If it has two wheels (or 3, or 4...) and pedals, someone is using it to commute. The principal things you want are:

1. Lots of low gears for hills (a triple front ring helps; every mtn/hybrid I've seen have them);
2. Fat tires with treads that won't get stuck in muni tracks or slip out from underneath you on slick surfaces;
3. A handlebar setup that allows you to sit up almost straight so you can watch what the maniacs around you are doing;
4. A nice big fucking handgun for when said maniacs attempt to cripple you (joke - sort of).

Other than that, it's all fucking gravy. You can get a good commuter (new) for a few hundred bucks and customize it as you see fit once you get used to it.

I'm not really sure what you're calling a "city/comfort" bike; the image that pops into my head is one of those old-fashioned 3-speed beach cruisers with big balloon tires and a flowered basket on the handlebars.
Don't get one of those fuckers; they can't climb for shit.

Thanks, Thoughtsurfer; I know that little corridor very well. It actually got 500% better once those fuckers at Slanted Door moved their fucking restaurant to the Embarcadero - we used to kick their fucking valet parking sign all to hell. Those fuckers were a menace. Good spring rolls, though.

Hey Blenderhead, take that recovery advice seriously. I had an encounter several years ago now--along the warf--with a delivery truck that backed into me at high speed on my little hybrid.

Nothing showed up for weeks--then it turned out I had vision problems for about a year after. And I was wearing a helmet. All that happened to the bike was the destruction of the front tire. I ended up with the most interesting perceptual problem. Very bright light gave me the sensation that I was operating two seperate visual systems--kinda' like my eyes were no longer working binocularly-but had broken up and were out on their own. Very interesting but rather challenging at times and impossible to explain to doctors.

good luck.
I often heard the sorrel nag (who always loved me) crying out, ..."Take care of thyself, gentle Yahoo."

I hate picking out a fucking bike. But anything's better than the Nishiki pos that I bought last time. If anyone knows about bikes, here are the two I had in mind.
http://www.marinbikes.com/html/spec_04_sausalito.html
or: http://www.marinbikes.com/html/spec_04_pine.html

I'm going to have to get something, I have to get in shape and the bike is the one thing I love as much as kayaking which I don't have the wetsuits for in the wintertime. My family is like no fucking kayaking until it warms up. So fuck it all, we're going to try and get a bike without spending a king's ransom. Ideas off list are welcome, I'd appreciate some help so I don't get fucked over like last time. Think of something that could ride across the GGB, handle the climb up Conzelman Rd, or that I could take on single track somewhere.

Now back to the fucking thread. I hate fucking Mondays.

Well fuck me!

The power went out at 5. At 10 I gave up on the power coming back and went to bed. The power came back on at 11:30 - and every fucking light (and one radio) in the house blazed up (too fucking stupid to think to turn them off) and I'm awake now.

Really fucking awake.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHH
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHH!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH!
I havent visited this topic for a while and now its on bikes!
Plenty of great places to go in san fran for a bike! Wish I hadent bothered to by a new one, there are some damn fine used ones on the market here and these guys can fix ANYTHING. My favorite bike ever is still My Jamis Ukiah, though. There is a HUGE difference in riding in the south bay and San fran, Everybody down here has a modified road bike with narrow tires and a straight bar with a lot of mirrors, and usualy a rack with paniers and the guys all wear jerseys and leggings and keep their work clothes in their bags or at the office. I say guys as in gender nutral, but usualy I am the only woman I see. One day I took a different train and it was all women, though! The San Fran commuters are more Punk, with fatter tires and mountain bikes, or hevily modded Bmx's. Don't bother with super knobby tires, you want something with a little texture though, as I have said before Kevlar is worth the money. And those fucking DJS have to Fucking DIE along with fucking clear channel in general.
check out http://www.loficustoms.com/ they have links to all the san fran bike resources! They are so fucking cool. Exept they never update their site! They are supposed to be putting fellow burner Desert Duck and his new ride up there soon.

Fuck! A laptop or a bike? Which choice?
Dell gave me a 2K line of credit for a laptop. I hate credit and would pay it off fast. But I also want a bike. Choices choices!

As for the bikes I'm tempted to go with the SF or South Bay style with the panniers and such. I want something that rides a little more comfy, and I still have my current mountain bike once it gets out of the shop. The bike guys took a look at the playa dust and asked where in the sam hell did you take that thing? If they only knew!

And your not the first to mention kevlar tires. I'm sick of flats, I've gotta look into those tires.

What is wrong with your old bike? You can probably fix it up to be more comfy. Ahh, Dont listen to me, I tend to choose style over comfort. You won't need to worry about people wondering what playa dust is out here, I'm prety sure at least half the bikes in san francisco still have some on them! I still have it on my lights even though I put them back on my road bike. I was staring at it with drunken reverence after one of my semi weekly mini decompressions with Desert Duck on monday. My hubby can hook you up with a laptop cheep at Action Computer! Or are you one of those people with a real job who can buy new stuff?

My fucking old bike was bought when I didn't know that much about bikes and I made some mistakes. It's never shifted right and I couldn't ride it with the confidence level I wanted. It did get me off my ass and taught me how to fix most problems on my own. But I'm at a point where I want an upgrade...XT or XTR components, disc brakes, good suspension, etc if I stick with a mountain bike.

Lately I'm doing more riding on paved trails scouting out the Urban Greenway proposed trail system for KC, when I get time to do it. So I would like to have a lighter bike that has a more upright riding stance. Mountain bikes can be fucking hellish on your back sometimes.

>more upright riding stance

huh.

my biking days are well behind me, for the most part, but there's a reason that those tdf guys ride all hunched over on tiny bikes with rock hard skinny seats and skinny little rock hard tires.

it's a matter of practice, and getting used to it, for the most part. it'll seem uncomfortable at first for long rides, but you'll also be amazed (especially if you're coming from a mountain bike) how riding a good road bike feels. it's like getting in a maserati after riding in a truck all your life. quick acceleration, nimble handling, and top speeds you thought you'd need a motor to achieve.

while it is uncomfortable at first., the reduced amount of power those bikes require will eventually extend your range far beyond what it would be with a bike with a more upright posture.

sounds to me like there are some old wounds to address here.
blaming it on the bike could be a case of transference and projection.
tell me: were you confident on your big wheel? on your tri-cycle?

I never had a tricycle, bigwheel or even fucking training wheels. I learned to ride the old school way...I still have the knee scars to prove it. I don't see this as a transference or projection issue but it did make me stop and think about it for a bit.

did your "old school" education leave scars there also?

The wounds of the spirit never heal completely. They heal for short periods of time and then reopen again with slight contact and the pain can be very intense. Some things are best NOT discussed in public, but you hit on something. Please don't go there.

Back to the fucking bike, I made the mistake of going with SRAM's grip shift. It was easier to control at the time but it's turned out to be a major hassle. I had a jammed shift that caused me to get my timing wrong on a hill, and I did a nice face plant into the dirt with 3 cracked ribs. Needless to say I don't want a repeat performance.

And the Forgotten History Foundation is very interesting.
