U.S. posts code-red alert; bans liquids
By LARA JAKES JORDAN and DAVID ESPO, Associated Press Writers 32 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration posted an unprecedented code-red alert for passenger flights from Britain to the United States and banned liquids from all carry-on bags Thursday, clamping down quickly after British authorities disrupted a frightening terror plot.

The heightened restrictions triggered long lines at airports across the country, and governors in at least three states ordered National Guard troops to help provide security.

"This was a well-advanced plan," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told reporters as British authorities announced the arrests of 24 alleged plotters. "In some respects suggestive of an al-Qaida plot."

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said as many as 10 flights had been targeted.

Other officials said the plotters had hoped to bring the planes down in a cascade of horror over the Atlantic Ocean, possibly within days. They said the plan involved the use of a peroxide-based solution, flammable when sparked by innocent-appearing small electronic devices. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitive nature of the subject.

Targeted were United, American and Continental Airlines flights from Britain to major U.S. destinations, which officials said probably included New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

A senior U.S. counterterrorism official said the suspects, whose ages ranged from 17 to the mid-30s, were looking to sneak at least some chemicals on the planes in sports drink bottles. Teams of at least two or three men were assigned to each flight, the schedules for which they had researched on the Internet, the official said.

Two other U.S. officials said British, U.S. and Pakistani investigators were trying to trace the steps of the suspects in Pakistan and were seeking to determine whether a couple of them attended terrorist training camps there.

A congressman briefed by intelligence officials, who did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the investigation, said U.S. intelligence had intercepted terrorist chatter and British intelligence helped thwart the plot through undercover work.

In brief remarks from Green Bay, Wis., President Bush said the events showed the nation "is at war with Islamic fascists."

The red alert for flights from Britain was the first since the color-coded warning system was developed after the 2001 terror attacks. The decision to ban nearly all liquids from passenger cabins was reminiscent of the stringent rules imposed when planes were allowed back in the skies for the first time afterward the Sept. 11 attacks.

<b>"No liquids or gels will be allowed in carry-on baggage," Chertoff said. "There will be exceptions for baby formula and medicines, but travelers must be prepared to present these items for inspection at the checkpoint, and that will allow us to take a look at them and make sure that they're safe to fly."

That meant water containers, soft drinks, coffee cups and more had to be shed by passengers waiting to board their flights.

Women travelers surrendered bottles and jars of creams and lotions from their makeup kits.

At Dulles, one passenger fished a bottle of Tequila from a carry-on bag. It joined the rest of the newly classified contraband in a trash container.</b>

It was not clear how long the restrictions would remain in effect. One lawmaker, Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., said the situation "eliminates the days of carry-on baggage."

It isn't only the US banning liquids, so is the UK.

Terrorists have discovered how to concoct liquid explosives that were to be placed in sport-drink bottles. The bottles were to have a false bottom with the explosive located in it so the terrorist could take a drink from it if so ordered by security without any problems. Preventing liquids in the passenger cabin might be the smart thing to do at the moment considering that we now know what method these people intended to use to blow up those planes.

Now, interestingly enough, two people from Dearborn MI were arrested in rural Ohio yesterday with $11,000 cash and maps of every single Wal-Mart from Ohio to South Carolina. They had 12 phones with them (they had just started on their trip). They admitted to having just sold 600 phones to a party in Dearborn and were on a trip to collect more. They were busted after a Radio Shack employee got suspicious and called the sheriff.

Now I ask you ... why would anyone in Dearborn ( or anyone else ... but Dearborn has an interesting demographic ) want 600 cell phones and then send someone out to get even more? I might remind you that cell phones are the detonator of choice for IEDs the world around.

"the Bush administration" would be insane NOT to declare a red alert on air travel at this particular moment considering at least 10 people wanted in the British plot are still at large.

...I have been waiting for this development (it was certainly predictable - I am amazed it took this long. Binary explosives are quite common, and have been known for decades). There will be a few more developments to come (I leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure them out). Ultimately I predict that passengers will be drugged and/or locked in their seats (like an amusement park ride). Talk about some fear! Where's the hope?

Don't freak over this. It's barely over 2 weeks until the event, meanwhile the TSA will get a backlash from everyone inconvenienced by the new delays thanks to the screening procedures. Instead of sticking with the more intense and truly appropriate screening procedures they'll chicken out and go back to the status quo and I betcha you can measure the time to the backslide in days. Next thing you know lighters will be permitted again, heck they'll likely backslide on allowing religious knives as carry-on items...in short it's all just a knee jerk reaction. Give it a bit of time and it will go right back to being the same shit as it ever was. I doubt even another 9/11 size episode would make any substantial long lasting changes...in particular some of the real changes that should have been made years ago.

If you really want security flying overseas you fly El Al. Everything else doesn't even come close.

Looks like it is Italy now too. They just arrested 40 terrorists apparently part of the same plot. Folks, these people were out to murder many thousands of people. They are some sick pups.

From SFGate...

Police in Italy arrested 40 people in a security crackdown after the thwarting of airline plot, the Interior Ministry said, but it did not link them directly to the London case. The arrests were made at "Islamic gathering places" in several cities on charges of violating residency rules or committing property crimes, it said.

Foreigners have been a big bone of contention in Italy anyway, so it may have been incidental. What is known is this... there are 2 kinds of people living in Italy - Italians and Foreigners. If you're in the first group, you're home. If you don't belong in the first group you're in the second, and if you're in the second go somewhere. Just not there.

Anyway, the Italian arrests seem more criminal than terrorist related, however, the Carbinieri tend not to say too much about too much...

These people have been killing us for decades. But in this case they are were going to kill Brits and Italians. So far we haven't found a cell here. I seem to remember Hezbollah blowing up a barracks full of French troops too. Those type are equal opportunity killers. Their game is hirabah, not jihad.

In accordance with this years theme and curent TSA regulations, Extreme Panic has been authorized. This is an upgrade to the authorization of Permanent Public Practice of Panic and Paranoia (PPPPP) of Septemer 12, 2001.

Please leave rationality and common sense at the door.

Have a doomed day.

They're our fingers, seems like we'd have 100% of the role.

In any event, as we are tooling toward the event with some of the cheapest gas on the planet, more or less safe in the richest consumer society in known history think about the role of Empire and Violence in making it possible for us to go to the desert and burn. Societies that are not as rich as ours have similar fesitvals, but nothing on the scale of waste that is burningman.

We are all spoiled children of a system that uses violence to protect our riches. Does that give you hope or fear?

Darn it all! If we would just bring back the AIRSHIP, we would have NOTHING to worry about! It'd go something like this:

"Oh my God! Terrorists have commandeered the Goodyear blimp! The are heading straight for the Sears Tower! I can't stand to watch!"

<bink! the blimp bounces off the building.>

"Huh?"-- terrorists and news anchors in unison.

Truth. I love many people on this board and other burners off of it. But our priveledge is built on the backs of people who lead miserable underfed hopeless lives, just as surely as Nero's was.

I believe in an america that treasures freedom of speech and free assembly and expression and pursuit of happiness and "truth" rather than an america that bullies and self-deludes. Is the burn simply another useless spring break event or is it a chance to learn better techniques of interaction and responsibility and (dare I say it) "community."

I guess the choice is ours.

On the other hand a purely or even overtly political event would be abore and feeding our souls is part of changing the world. But the enemy is those who lie and scare and bully; tactics not ideology.

August 22nd and Sept 11 are the expected target days.
So guess when my nonstop flight is!

Just knowing Apockaliptika should get me on the nofly list!

The 22nd is the High Holy Day of Involuntary Conversion or something like that.

Are we still permitted to take breaths?

As of now I’m still planning on holding to one small carry on and sending the rest of my stuff,( not much) with a friend in his trailer,.. is seems like as things go on there might not be much left I can take on the flight with me.

terrorists early tests took place on a Japanese Plane, components including the Nitroglycerin were assembled in a restroom and placed under a seat. the devise used a Casio watch as a timer and a light bulb filament to set it off. it was not a suicide mission and only killed one as I understand it.
