A plan by a Bremen zoo to tempt a group of male Humboldt penguins who have been engaging in homosexual activity into mating with female penguins that the zoo has flown in from Sweden has set off protests by gay and lesbian groups. Humboldt penguins are listed as a vulnerable species with a worldwide population at just 13,000. ''Nobody here is trying to break up same-sex pairs by force,'' the zoo's director said. ''We don't know if the three male pairs are really gay or just got together because of a lack of females.''
