Astoria, Oregon to BRC
I'll be heading out on August 24th from Astoria (up on the NW corner of the state) to Portland to pick up another BM virgin, then we'll spend the next few days enjoying the trip down there and arrive on the 28th.
I don't know the exact route we're going to take yet, but Portland and Eugene are both definite places I'll be passing through.
Just pay your share of gas and you're in. I have a smaller SUV with only myself and a friend so far. Whether you want to hang out past the drive is neither here nor there, just offering up some space :)
To either convince yourself I'm not too scary (or the opposite) you can visit me on myspace - myspace.com/ringmasterdarin
(The friend I'll be with is #4 on my top friends list - barry)
Darin (send me a private message - we're getting closer and the messages are moving faster)

Where the hell are you going? If you go over from Ashland that two montains. From Roseburg is a gas drinking climb. Out of Eugene!! I come back that way so I can coast all the way down.(it is steep) Or going into Ca. makes the trip 100's mile longer. I head out of Salem on hyw 22 to Sisters. Then to La pine Turn east to Lakeview into Ca. Hang a left into Cedarvill. Follow the Burners to Black Rock City. Gas in Bend and Lakeview. Carrie 5 gal extra. Beyond Lakeview gas is gold. Don't stop to pinic where it's grass and/or water. You will be eaten alive. We have camped about 40 out from BM. There is a gravel pit. Good place to rest.
I'm the contraptioneer your mother warned you about.

directions say to go this way...
I-5 south towards salem
take OR-58 E / WILLAMETTE HWY via EXIT 188A toward OAKRIDGE / KLAMATH FALLS. 86.7 miles
OR-58 E / WILLAMETTE HWY becomes US-97 S / THE DALLES-CALIFORNIA HWY. 77.5 miles
US-97 S / THE DALLES-CALIFORNIA HWY becomes OR-39 S. 4.5 miles
Turn LEFT to stay on OR-39 S (Crossing into CALIFORNIA). 21.2 miles
OR-39 S becomes CA-139. 55.0 miles
Turn LEFT onto CA-299. .. and so on..
so I may very well go back north from eugene and take that route.. eugene is just part of the trip because i have family there. im specifically taking a few days to get there because i love road trips. the directions say its 570 miles from my place here in astoria.
thanks for the heads up though. i was probably going to just wing it with an atlas. so provided i am not picking anyone else up, ill probably leave eugene and backtrack the little ways north to start heading over. maybe i will go through bend though since ive got family there too.
who knows..
either way thanks for the advice :) we may just opt for that route

actually.. if i remember correctly.. the exit to visit my family off I-5 is 194 in Eugene, so I wouldn't be backtracking at all based on the way the directions say to go.
But I guess they don't comensate for terrain, just distance.
I'll have to investigate a lil more. I hadn't worried about it just yet

Or you could just come down the coast and cut east at Florence. Little slower but a lot nicer drive than I-5, and probably cooler too. From the ocean to the desert, nice dichotomyRINGMASTER wrote:so I may very well go back north from eugene and take that route.. eugene is just part of the trip because i have family there. im specifically taking a few days to get there because i love road trips. the directions say its 570 miles from my place here in astoria.

You can go over the montains east at Corvallis interchange off I 5. That's not a bad climb. The route in and out of K Falls is long and tiring. I ingraved and set tomb stone all over that part of the country. Sisters, La pine, Lakeview is the best ride.

yes i agree the drive down to florence is really nice. i was originally picking someone up from the airport in portland and going straight there.. but now we're gonna head back to astoria and unload some of his non essential stuff before beginning the next day. i love the coast drive and i think we may reserve that for the way back.
appreciate the input guys - looks like we will be taking the lakeview route :)
when are you guys heading down?

I'm shooting for a Friday morning departure from Eugene and stopping at the hot springs campground that the Seattle crowd love so much on Friday night. Playafall Saturday morning.
It's 430-some odd from here.

Year 04 forest fires made us change our rout. Keep your radios on. Sudden weather changes can screw with you. A weather statoin radio is good. We (as in two vans) are on CB's Ch2-3. I run a chanel check every couple hours. Those CB's are cheap. If you need some help out in the middle of no where. If you blah blah up my chanel, I'll piss in your ear.

I got caught in a forest fire traffic jam in the woods west of Susanville in '04.
It rocked!!
I think thirty vehicles — all Burners — got stopped to wait for the pilot car to take them through the area and we waited about forty-five minutes for it. Instead of sitting in our cars getting annoyed, we broke out the Playa gear, some art, ice chests, cranked up the music and had a party right there by the roadside! Everything was dusty from the Playa, the forest fire was about a half-mile south of us so we even got the scent of woodsmoke and Playa! About the only thing missing was, thankfully and of course, alcohol.

On your way to or from the burn
I see some of you might be driving by Eagle's Nest RV Park in Tionesta. Tionesta is 27 miles south of Tulelake, CA (54 miles south of Klamath Falls, Or) on California 139. If you need water, a hot shower, place to camp, Pina Colada,
Strawberry Daiquiri, California Medicinal Friendly, Conversation a hug and kiss... Stop by at any time. We purchased this 34 acre commercial property in March this year and have not changed the old website yet, but check it out for complete directions, phone number and email, if you think you might stop by.
