Geekster, you are correct except they also blew up 200 Marines who were sleeping in the barracks near the airport. At places like Officer Candidates School they show images from the ruins to weed out the squeamish. Won't elaborate there, but I handled an M-16 rifle barrel that had melted into a U.geekster wrote:These people have been killing us for decades. But in this case they are were going to kill Brits and Italians. So far we haven't found a cell here. I seem to remember Hezbollah blowing up a barracks full of French troops too. Those type are equal opportunity killers. Their game is hirabah, not jihad.
Irony of irony is that Ronald RayGun ordered the Marines to fall back to an aircraft carrier and the French mounted a retaliatory counterattack.

NOT AL QUAIDA
Coming home from Robot Wars a few years ago we got our red electric tape confiscated at the checkpoint. They let us keep the black electric tape. I was wearing a black military fatigue blouse with four pockets, so I got pulled aside and searched three or four times at Heathrow alone. Clearly I should have been more intoxicated.

I understand letting the Marines regroup before next move but what the hell was the "French mounted a retaliatory counterattack"ZaphodBurner wrote: Irony of irony is that Ronald RayGun ordered the Marines to fall back to an aircraft carrier and the French mounted a retaliatory counterattack.

this is a double negative...
But seriously who did the French attack?
I have also been under the impression that no one was found guilty of the barracks bombing just suspected.

Since I'm not flying to the playa this year I'm not sure why I'm reading this...
Even if I was flying to the playa, I'm *still* not sure why I'd be reading this.
Maybe next year, I'll fly out. Depends if I have my pilots license by then or not!!
Since I have relatives in England who, by fluke, aren't making it to the playa this year, I'm trying to figure out how where this conversation got to where it is is relevant to those who are flying the pond this year?
I will agree on this... it's relevant to our theme camp!! Thanks!

But seriously who did the French attack?
"In retaliation for the attacks, France launched an air strike in the Beqaa Valley against Iranian Revolutionary Guard positions. President Reagan assembled his national security team and planned to target the Sheik Abdullah barracks in Baalbek, Lebanon, which housed Iranian Revolutionary Guards believed to be training Hezbollah fighters. But Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger aborted the mission, reportedly because of his concerns that it would harm U.S. relations with other Arab nations."
Apokiliptika types may wish to cover their eyes now: "The Marine sentries at the gate were forbidden from using live ammunition, for fear that a discharge might kill a civilian, so they were powerless to stop him."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Beiru ... ks_bombing
Lastly, "Many in the U.S. government do not claim Hezbollah is responsible for the marine barracks attack. For example in 2001 Caspar Weinberger, Secretary of Defense under Reagan at the time of the attacks stated: "But we still do not have the actual knowledge of who did the bombing of the Marine barracks at the Beirut Airport, and we certainly didn't then ...
In May 2003, U.S. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth declared that the Islamic Republic of Iran was responsible for the 1983 attack, on the grounds that Iran had originally founded Hezbollah and financed the group throughout the years"

Let's not forget the "rescue" mission into Tehran during Carter's regime, where individual egos of the military muckymucks, all demanding their own individual piece of the pie, resulted in:
crashed helecopters
destroyed equipment
dead servicepeople
split up and hidden hostages
etc. etc. etc...
Goes to show you - had the right strategy been taken (Cater telling DOD F*** your petty pride, were trying to saving lives, not boosting your ego) history would be *much* different. Likely Reagan, the Religious Reich, and those coming behind him (Bush 1&2 and thier "ilk") would have never made it to the White House.
However... it does makes for a good Apokolypse. Ask those in the White House working their asses off to make that happen.
Finally - my original question stands. What does this have to do with flying to the playa from Britain?
Have a nice doom...

I would think, however, that anything in a carry-on bearing the words "Burning" and "Man" might shut down Heathrow for an indefinate period and or justify invasion of a third-world country. (Nevada could be considered third-world. Attack! ATTACK!!!)
((It's friggin' Nevada. Who buys alcohol where the dollar isn't worth dick and then brings it to NEVADA?! ))

What the--?! According to Greg Palast, bin Laden stated that his (bin Laden's) reason for attacking the U.S. was to get our troops out of Saudi Arabia, and Baby Bush withdrew our troops about the same time he declared "Mission Accomplished!" Urk! I always wondered what he meant by that declaration....

I still wanna know what was up with the Bin Laden family being flown out of the country when every other commercial flight was grounded right after 9/11? I've yet to see a good explanation for that.

You know as well as I do there is no good explination. Although, in a family that size you might not even know your black sheep brother. So maybe his anti-America crusade is really about something that happened around the dinner table 35 years ago...

Ya know, it's gotta be hard for a president to be supportive of the family who is backing you financially *and*the family who's country is the major source of your family's wealth, especially when the former's goals are to see to the removal of the latter from power...
