Never mind these two... especially that Sensei... it's him that's ruining this event anyway.

Advice in a nutshell:

#1)Go to the First Timers guide on the main Burning Man page.
#2) Read it twice
#3) Search for your answers via the search function at the top of the page.
#4) Hang around the eplaya... watch and read to see how things flow around here. There is a wealth of knowledge trapped just waiting to spew forth.
#5) Ask questions that you cannot find the answers to here. Despite what you may have been told the people that hang out here are pretty decent.
#6) Go to step #1

Much apreciation for your responses. I continually read this website and am updating myself with all of the information. I feel I may be too organized. I have a BM file that I started with highlighted pages.

Yes, Defurring is just the 1st signs of trouble.. Next he will start to sniff welding fumes... Then he will become Delusional and think its ok to roll in dust and hang out in make believe bars and fix cyber drink for one and all. If that starts lock your doors...

No! goddammit! I am so tired of hearing this horrible advice around here!

DO NOT PISS CLEAR!!! If you are pissing clear, that means that you have drank FAR too much water and thined out your salts to the point where you are in big trouble.

You want your piss to look "normal". Light yellow and not cloudy. If it is cloudy or dark yellow drink more water now. And don't forget to get sodium and potassium in your drinks and food too. Thats what your brain fires with.

I think I'll second that... don't think I've ever pissed clear in my life. Normal light yellow... good. Dark yellow... bad. Use energen-C or similar.

Hmmm... haven't looked at a package of emergen-C in a while. Whats the stats on the sodium and potassium content in a pack of that stuff?

Hmm.. USRDA is as follows:

Sodium: 500mg - 2400mg

Potassium: 2000mg - 3500mg

Meat is a good source of both, but you're losing even more than normal, so I'd increase those numbers by another 50% minimum.

Muscle cramps are a good sign that you're low on potassium.
One banana will give ya around 350mg potassium.

While on playa, I use two packets per water bottle. probably consum 20 packets a day or so...

And Msky... I understand. The orange and lime are pretty good, but the cranberry one is awful.

the best advice i can think of right now....

Post by madison » Sun Jul 02, 2006 10:59 pm

As a lone lady roaming blindly around the playa for the first time last year my advice is as follows:

1. before the burn get some visual landmarks of the camps around you...because people take the streets signs after the burn & you will get lost! (unless of course you want to be lost...might have a blast actually!)

2. try to keep your private parts clean. i came back with a nasty kidney infection...i suppose it's from rolling around on the playa once or twice with a few irish lads and at that moment cleanliness was not a priority :D

3.bring one pair of pants...very necessary.

4. cigarettes are great bartering tools.

5. hop on at least one art car daily. you will be glad you did!

6. at night watch where you step. you could get a really nasty injury if you don't.

7.my mom told me to do this in middle school when i changed schools mid-year... smile at any & every one! just the simple act of smiling opens a world of possibilities!

these are the most apparent pieces advice i can think of. but above all keep your mind, heart & eyes open...the playa will take care of the rest!

oxoxox

I sweat my brains out working outside in the summer. Favorite hydration solution is emergency mixed with 'Vruit' juice and diluted down with water til it doesn't taste too sweet. Awesome pick up in energy. Has more than just the sodium/potassium (other mineral complexes and B vitamins)

Tropical? is my favorite.

Oh yeah - good advice: 2 band dust masks (extras to give as gifts) These are the kind people use for dry wall and they're a little better than the really cheap kind. That dust is heinous and will limit the total number of times that I go to the burn.

Being that this is a pot-luck type festival, what do you have that you are bringing to the event?? Please no necklaces!!! Been done a million times already. Some sort of Service? An activity people can do? Art to share? A joke to play on people? Do one of the above and you will be much welcomed!!

Free advice:

Understand that this is a highly unstructured event. Look for possibilities, and don't be too disappointed if you go to some scheduled event and find that there's only the schedule, no event. On the way back to your camp you may well stumble on to something better.
