I was there in 2002

During the 2002 cleanup the jet stream touched down on the playa which it does occasionally in the Great Basin. Yes there were winds clocked at over 100mph. Bits of alkali dust bit into the skin on my legs that actually bled. If you pissed it didn't land but went horizontal.

Condition Alpha was given and everyone was in lock down.

No moving or driving for half a day for three days.

My tent ripped open was knocked down and a sand dune 2 1/2 feet high formed around it. Row after row of porta potties were lying door down. We had to go to each one and see if anyone was trapped covered in shit. We found no one, but shit.

Luckily, it started a day after the event closed.

You can easily die and be blown away covered by sand only to be found in Winnamucca.

You probably wouldn't make it to Winnemucca, but I wouldn't be surprised to find a few corpses floating in Trego.

Under conditions like that, particularly at night, I would be more worried about burn barrels and hot embers blowing around, sheets of plywood, lawn furniture ... in other words, either being struck by some kind of wind-driven missile or having embers blown into the chill space setting all the bedding on fire.

Secure those burn barrels. I think I am going to drive three rebar stakes around the perimiter of the burn barrel and then slip about a 3-foot length of pipe over each one. That should keep the burn barrel fixed in position.

Fortunately the legs of my dutch oven/mini stove have feet. I'm gonna lock that sucker down with rebar kandykanes and stereo cable.

What, you didn't know stereo cable is strong? I used to secure my topload with that stuff. Better than bungee nets, 'tis 'tis...

There will be wind gusts to a bazillionty miles per hour, wind scorpions that will gnaw on your toes, windblown rebar flying across the playa and THE MOTHERFUCKIN SNAKES that crawl into your tent at night. Other than that, it should be a great burn.

Got BACON?

Do the snakes eat the snails?

I hate to change the tone of this thread just when it gets interesting but I made something that might help with the dust.
I got a big truck air filter in a canister and a small 12v fan. The canister gets bungied on the roof. The fan gets mounted to a board that I'll temporary screw on to the window. I have a 3 in hose connecting the 2.

When the wind kicks up bad, I'll power the fan and make a small positive pressure inside the camper to stop the infiltration of dust. I learned this in OZ. You might be able to do the same thing with a cheap 12 v vacuum cleaner.

I've never seen snow. (Going since '96)

I am always amazed to see threads like this, or get email annoucements from friends telling how bad the weather will be;

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?

Great gophers, of course it will be extreme weather! It's the friggin' playa!

1-The Playa will always be Dusty.
2-The Playa will always be Hot.
3-The Playa will sometimes be Cold.
4-The Playa will sometimes be Wet.

Bring outer wear for those four rules and get over it. The first thing I do when getting to the playa is jump out of my car and roll in the dirt. Once the door opens, you begin moving steadily away from clean, so why worry about it?

Actually..... 1) white out dust storm 2) rain 3) hail that covered the playa followed with a triple rainbow all within about 30-45 minutes.

I believe it was 1994 or 95.

1994 and I didn't have me camera! it was about the most dramatic evening ever on the playa!

1999 I believe it almost made it to 30 degrees after a evening of rain.

If you never been on a wet playa people, please don't drive, ride and even walk if you can avoid it. It ruins the roads and you end up with a foot/ tire plaster of gumbo that forms around you. please stay put until the sun shines. Everything should be dryed out in an hour or so unless its night so wait until morning to start moving about.

Ahhhhh, memories of 2002 !!

That was a crazy fucking storm...we had to tear down our large rave camp at 10:00 & the Esplanade. It took forever....fucking wind was whipping us, making us bleed. Once we finally got to the highway later that day, we were told that we were the last people to make it out.

Out of our camp of 25 people, 1/2 had taken off before the storm hit. Once the storm hit a few more got out. There was about 10 of us left to pack shit up and to get the fuck off the Playa.

After making it back to Reno that night, a couple of us had gotten severe alkilai poisening. We ended up in the hospital getting IV's and inhalors to help breathe. We were sick for over 7 days. All i could smell or taste was the playa. It was the worst expirence we have seen in 11 years of attending BM.

I hope for everyones sakes that Alpha doesnt happen again..especially during the peak days of BM. Be ready just in case. You never know when Alpha is going to kick your fucking ass.

Wouldn't it be nice to hold Burning Man in a nice grassy place that wasn't so dry? These people are lucky.

Skin flute perhaps? Don't tell me you're one of those types that runs around with a shirt, sandals, and a smile? Of course if the playa reports are to be believed anything exposed might get a nice playa-ized microderm abrasion session. OUCH!
