Contractor bags

Post by disrup-sean » Mon Aug 14, 2006 3:20 pm

Don't buy the worthless crap trash bags they sell at Safeway, esp. for your compostable waste. Unless you want a week's worth of putrid chicken bones and diseased liquified melon rinds leaking or breaking through and spilling all over your car and onto the highway.

Go to home despot or costco or the hardware store and buy CONTRACTOR bags. They're made from the same black trash-bag plastic, but much THICKER. Check the box, make sure they're at least 2mil thick. They're a couple bucks more but it's soooo worth it.

I bought 42-gallon 3mil bags last week at Home Despot on sale, I think it was $13 for a box of 32. Enough for me, my campmates and a few for neighbors.

Cheers

Okay, for real this time:

If your bike has a kickstand, a small scrap of plywood placed on the ground will enable it to actually do its job, instead of sinking into the playa like a stiletto heel.

I'm about to see if I can secure a small piece of wood right onto the bottom of the kickstand, to obviate the need to carry something around. Then again, if it's really deep this year, maybe it's back to the lean-the-bikes-against-each-other deal.

I've heard that taking a tennis ball, popping a hole in it, and putting that on the end of the kickstand works very well. No wood to carry around. :)

Damn near wrecked my bike on one while riding one night. Got lucky and saw it with my headlamp at the last second and dodged. I though those open playa art pieces were supposed to be lit?
Was anyone going to answer this?

Nope.

But I DO have a tip... bring a small spray bottle with you wherever you go... that way if you have to go #2 you can spray down that sandpaper-like 1 ply toilet tissue a little bit and save the old brown eye a LOT of wear and tear. (It's also quite refreshing in the middle of the afternoon and gives you a nice, *fresh* feeling)

Also: make sure to attach small scraps of plywood to your stiletto heels, or they'll sink right into the playa like a bike kickstand.

"Who was the damn nut that stuck a bunch of concrete footprints out in the middle of the playa without any lights on them??"

They were lit some nights. It was part of "The Passage" art installation. They were the footprints of the mother and child. They were supposed to be lit with fire but I can't recall now if they were or not most nights. I was so toasted by the end of the day from working on an art installation last year that I was generally in bed before midnight.

Thought I did that. Trying again (trucker's hitch):

{Nope. Oh well -- just cut & paste it. A very nice instruction for a very handy knot.)

it's the apostrophe in the url ... a bug in the software used here.

Replace the apostrophe with %27

But in any case, the URL you gave is broken, doesn't work.

http://www.constructionwork.com/resourc ... _knot.html

Okay, I see the other problem ... a space got inserted in the word "hitch" Nothing I can do about it ... another bug in the software here. Apparently it has something to do with long URLs

Okay, the space shows up in visual formatting but not in the actual text of the post which breaks cut/paste.

So ... get rid of the apostrope and get rid of the space if cut-pasting, or just click the link I made above.

anyways, a couple of good tricks...if you wipe down your dishes with baby wipes before rinsing them you can avoid moopy grey water...better yet bring paper plates and bowls; it makes very little additional trash and saves a lot of work.

LOVE the idea of freezing 2L bottles with water for block ice before leaving for the playa--thanks for that one! this year i'm giong to try laying a towel down over our ice so our food doesn't end up swimming in cooler-water by the end of the week. it will soak up some of the excess anyways.

and this year, cook less, freeze more. last year the FABULOUS Camp Question gave us a ziplock full of some kind of pre-cooked super pasta that our whole camp snacked on all week. this year i'm taking it to the next level and freezing all kinds of pre-made goodies (chinese take-out, burritos, beef stew, whatever) to bring out with us. when you want to eat, take it out and let it thaw and voila, dinner for everyone!

What we do is to have a large ice chest with the fruit and veggies in it. But we place a large pot in the middle for the ice. This keeps the fresh stuff cold without soaking in water.. Always keep any ice chest in the shade and if you can off the ground. This will keep the chest colder longer.. BTW the melted ice from the pot can be drank if the pot was clean.

Never drink the water from an ice chest that has food and ice mixed in together.. You will find yourself in the med tent for sure..

HD is selling cases of water bottles that come up to, roughly, 4 gallons per case. I'm getting some of those and freezing one case, split it between my two main ice chests. I have a softsides ice chest for the chocolate but that's going to be cooled with freeze packs because chocolate and water don't mix. Even with Ziplocs...

'Cause it's the TIP of his trunk. TIP. Sheesh.

As for the rest, I dunno, ask the elephant. It's his secret.

Tip I'm ready to reveal: Burning Man is occasionally upsetting.
