Driving from Bryce Canyon

Post by Mrs Beltane » Wed Aug 16, 2006 11:30 am

Hi, I'm a UK Burner who will be driving to BRC from Bryce Canyon. I'm wondering......

1) Has anybody else here done that drive before?

2) What is the best route.....It's not easy to work out on Mapquest and I'd really likek some inside info....Is it possible to do in a day...any good stopping points along the way?

I'm no stranger to long distances...two years ago I drove from the Grand Canyon to Yosemite West (724 miles) in 15 hours but really wouldnt like to spend any longer than 12 hours behind the wheel.

Thanks in advance for any replies....Can't wait to get to BRC!!!!

Yeah, I have done it. Easiest way might be to head to Cedar City then go West on State Hwy 56 to Panaca, NV. At Panaca, turn North on US 93 toward Ely (pronounced eel-ee) and pick up US 50 West toward Reno.

93N merges with 50W before Ely.

Oh, and there aren't many chances to get fuel out there so get it when you can.

At Fernley you will not actually get onto Interstate 80. Go toward I-80 but you will want to go across the Interstate and get on Route 447 which will take you all the way to Gerlach.

Directions from Bryce to Panaca

Directions from Panaca to Gerlach

But Yahoo suggests a slightly different route

I suggested via Panaca because I am familiar with that route but I actually like the yahoo suggested route better, it gets you on US 50 sooner. But again, get fuel when you can. There isn't much on US 50 across Utah and Nevada.

I'm planning on driving though Nevada on Hwy 50 (the loneliest road in america) (google it). Plan on stopping at Spencer's Hot Springs http://www.cmdrmark.com/spencers.html if I have time. Looking forward to driving this portion of the trip.

A route I would suggest for people coming anywhere from the Mississippi river on East, though it might take a little more time ... take Interstate 40 across as far as Arizona and cut North (pretty much follows the old US 66 route). See Meteor Crater, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam.
