my beloved french press and the playa...

Post by haolegolucky » Thu Aug 17, 2006 6:28 pm

so, being a treehuggin' hippie who also adores excellent and super strong coffee, I have a tendency to bring my frenchpress everywhere.

so in keeping with the leave no trace stuff, how do I dispose of coffee grinds on the playa?

garbage?

I can't put it in a mesh bag, because it will leak out and drip brown crap everywhere.

suggestions? I am all for composting whenever possible, as I do at my own house.

this is probably a stupid question with an easy answer, but c'est la vie.

Get a couple of xmas tins from Goodwill. Take the grounds home for the worms. The love it.

Use a barbecue grill. One made to turn over four hamburgers at a time. Put a couple handy wipes on one side dump the grounds on. Cover them with wipes close the grill and hang up to dry.

I have already promised my worms that some of them can go to BM 07and party harty on the garbage.

Coffee and chocolate are my fav vegetables.
I'll leave BM with a huge bag of wet espresso grounds and choc wrappers.

In 03 I use paint filters.

Put a fliter into the top of a container. The opening of the container should be small enough to hold the the filter about 1/4 of the way.

Just put wet garbage in let it dain and dry. Staple the full filter closed for worm garden or dispose in a plastic bag.

I don't like wet garbage on a road trip.

I'm shooting for 3 to 5 pound of garbage. 3 is ideal for one camper.

I was just visiting the local too-expensive-but-still-irresistable-camping-supplies-store, where I discovered a French press that's designed to go inside a standard Lexan bottle.

I know I'm a coffee slob but....

I took the stem and basket out of the camp coffee perk. Got rid of the pot. Set the stem/basket in a 3 cup camp cup. Pour the water in, set the basket out and injoy a cup-a.

Cut out the middle man. Less camp=more fun time

Another option is to make coffee using a cold brewing system. You basically make an espresso strength coffee cold, which you can freeze into ice cubes or a Lexan bottle. 1 pound of coffee makes about one quart of extract that is mixed 1:4 with water. We did this last year and it worked great. The coffee is also very low in acidity. So much so that you may want to stay away from the low acidity beans (like Indonesian) and go for something like the Central American types.
