I hate to refer business, but Walmart in Reno has mountain bikes really cheap. Last year they were about $60. Don't forget to bring at least 2 extra inner tubes. For some reason, I have had more than one blow out every year I've been there. A bike lock is also a must. I picked one up at the dollar store for----well, a buck!
I saw the used bike man in '04 but had hauled bikes from the East coast, in '05 we didn't get to Gerlach until about 9 and he had already gone home, or somewhere anyway.
One thing I have done is bought bikes and left them at Ratt's, he cleans and fixes them up, stores them and rents them out to long distance folks -- he is out of bikes now.
I have broken down and rented a storage unit to pack stuff after this burn and will be getting the bottom of the line bike at Black Rock Bicycles. The Sea Breeze is $150 and they tell me they can set one up to fit -I am 6'4" and K-mart bikes kill my knees. They do have some really neat bikes but I cannot spend $350 and up for a bike that I ride one week a year. I will report after I get home. (Note I am something of a bike geek and picky.)
On another note, since I am getting the storage unit I am shipping a metric shitload of stuff out on Greyhound. A lot of my local friends did not know about this so I mention it here. The price is reasonable and the station in Reno is downtown and about 2 blocks from the Sands were I normally stay.
