How to protect vinyl on the playa

Post by alt12 » Sun Aug 20, 2006 8:20 pm

So a friend is joining our camp for the first time this year and is thinking of brining his vinyl collection to BM and spinning for everyone. He was concerned about brining his vinyl, that it would get ruined, melt, be damaged by playa dust, etc. I've not had to deal with this in the past, so I don't know what to tell him. Obviously lots of people bring their record collections so I assume its not a big deal. What should I recommend to him? Thanks,
alex

Mix it onto a laptop and come down and dance with the rest of us.

two things...

1. have your friend learn that cdjs are better, and all his problems will be solved (a plus of that is that your record bitch becomes a cd bitch, which makes them happier!)

2. costco had these coolers that were reinforced on the sides and insulated. They fit records in them perfectly and I have tested them in eastern washington in the middle of summer at phoenix festival. They cost about $25 and worked fine. Comes in an assortment of colors too!

Oh no he di'int!

I've brought records out in the past... basically you'll be fine if you...

a) Keep your records in the shade at all times! I've kept mine on our school bus or any shady, ventilated area and it works fine. Don't keep them in a car or enclosed area where the temps can get quite hot.

b) Put your records back in the sleeve immediately after playing them and ONLY bring them out when/where you know you'll be playing them. Keeping them in their bags at all times will save a lot of wear and tear.

You will have SOME dust on them, just like everything else you bring out for the week. However a small bottle of vinyl cleaning solution and a soft cloth will take care of that.

:D

As far as storage... I just use the Shure record bags... they have backpack straps on them which makes it MUCH easier to transport on the playa... just throw them on yer back, hop on a bike and go!

CD's are way better if you don't care what music sounds like. Vinyl for life.
