To join two pieces of rug, place a strip of paper or cardboard underneath and glue it with elmer's glue. That's it. Bring lots of glue! And paper.

we had a bunch of squares of carpet last year and we just used duct tape. seemed to work pretty well- held it together nicely and no time waiting for glue to dry.

UH, this is a good tip, despite the few hours glue takes to set. Just put some boxes over the seams for a while, that's all. Glue is cheaper in volume than duct tape, and paper/cardboard is usually free...
