The earliest preserved description of elves comes from Norse mythology. In Old Norse they are called álfar (singular, nominative case: álfr), and although no older or contemporary descriptions exist, the appearance of beings etymologically related to álfar in various later folklore strongly suggests that the belief in elves was common among all the Germanic tribes, and not limited solely to the ancient Scandinavians.

Wyrd is a concept in ancient Anglo-saxon and Nordic cultures roughly corresponding to fate. It is cognate to Modern English weird.

The word comes from Anglo-Saxon verb weorþan, to become, and itself derives from an Indo-European root verb meaning "to turn". In its literal sense, it refers to the past, or that which has become.

Wyrd shows its most "paradoxical" side, and perhaps its most severe side when the realization dawns that no individual chooses to react to present situations free of Wyrd — no part of the Web of Wyrd is independent of another part.

Well of Wyrd
The Well of Wyrd illustrates the concept of past actions determining the course of the future. The universe is conceived of as Yggdrasil, the World Tree, which is nourished by the Well of Wyrd. Dew drips from the branches of Yggdrasil and falls into the Well. This symbolizes the actions performed in the present as they become part of the past. Eventually, they are drawn back up into the World Tree and nourish its fruit.

Web of Wyrd
The Web of Wyrd is a popular analogy, which shows how all actions are interconnected, as well as the fact that everything we do has far-reaching consequences. Essentially, this Web of Wyrd is described as a cloth being woven upon a loom by the Norns. The wool is woven through the warp. The former represents past actions, while the latter represents a particular instance in time. The entire cloth is the overall design.

Influencing Wyrd
To the ancient Anglo-Saxons, as well as modern-day Heathens, Wyrd was often a consequence of Symbel, a ritualistic drinking of alcohol to excess in which story-telling by means of narrative verse was a central feature.

Sociologists usually define power as the ability to impose one's will on others, even if those others resist in some way.

"By power is meant every opportunity/possibility existing within a social relationship, which permits one to carry out one's own will, even against resistance, and regardless of the basis on which this opportunity rests."

Coercion is the practice of compelling a person to involuntarily behave in a certain way (whether through action or inaction) by use of threats, intimidation or some other form of pressure or force. Coercion may typically involve the actual infliction of physical or psychological harm in order to enhance the credibility of a threat. The threat of further harm may then lead to the cooperation or obedience of the person being coerced.

Economic coercion is when an agent (the coercer) puts economic pressure onto the victim (coercee). The most common example of this is cutting off the supply to an essential resource, such as water. If someone is the owner of the only water supply another person can use, then his threat to refuse to supply him with water is a death threat. Even though it only involves the coercer's refusal to enter into a contract, without any use of physical force, this kind of coercion can be very powerful indeed.

Economic coercion requires market power. In the above example, the coercer's refusal to supply the coercee would be meaningless if the coercee had access to other independent sources of supply. But the coercer can turn his conditional refusal into a vital threat only because of his pure monopoly power over an essential resource, with no other substitutes.

Predatory coercion
The purely selfish kinds of coercion are a form of predatory behaviour by the coercing party, whose aim is to narrow down the scope of other people’s actions so as to make them instrumental to its own personal interests. According to many social philosophers, this sort of predatory behaviour would become the prevailing one under conditions of social anarchy.
