Insects on the Playa

Post by wanderingpixie » Wed Aug 23, 2006 2:11 pm

WARNING!

Daft question from BM '06 virgin approaching!

Just wondering - do mosquitoes tend to be a problem out on the playa? I'm asking so I know whether I really need to add some insect repellent to the growing supply pile in the loungeroom...or not.

Any advice/stories of experience with mosquitoes - or any other playa insectoid lifeform - would be handy. People in giant bug suits don't count, though :-)

Cheers!

(biting his lip)
In short, no. No Bug problems.

The only insect life you will find on the playa is the hitchhiking kind, riding in some persons car or camping gear. There is no native flora or fauna of any kind.

Occasionally a horse fly or dragonfly will get blown in from the surrounding hills. And the occasional moth or spider that jumps out of someone's van when they open it. That's pretty much it.

Leave the insect repellant at home.

we have had praying mantis fly in with the wind before...
Don't worry; it only seems kinky the first time.

In 04 a dragonfly stop about a foot from my face. Bout that time I was bitten in the back. I smashed the little back bitter. The dragonfly did'nt want it then.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. At least I won't have to worry about bug repellent, just the 999 other things in the pile of stuff to pack

Also, thank you for being patient with me, as a newbie. I've only just started navigating around the eplaya, so I haven't found everything yet.
