Yeah, I just realized that BM starts the week my kid starts school (this is first year in big kid school as he puts it), which means A) I have to have someone take him to school his first week of the new year or B)Send him to grandma's, thus missing the first week of school.

Dam, what to do???!!!! Reason #129 not to have kids, Burning Man conflicts.

T.

go with option A!. I missed my kid's 1st day of kindergarten last year too. My friends thought it was horrible, but I took a picture of him getting on the bus his 3rd day and it was FINE.........20 years down the road (or even 1 year) it's not gonna make a bit of difference. Option A all the way.

It's even worse, Statistics show that she will fall maddly in love with her Biology teacher and 4rmonths later they will be on the Jerry Springer show..
Which will also happen to be the very same day as the free tickets I got in the mail to go see the Springer show being taped.. And then I see you in the front row flashing your boobies in order to get your "jerry beads"

Springer for President
BTW next time turn around so we all can see...

There are all sorts of wonderful camping trips you could do for an extra week. It doesn't have to be all burn. Or hook up with dpw and do a week's worth of clean up.

I have many friends who are high school teachers, college professors and graduate students. Burning Man falls on the worst week of the year for all of these folks, none of whom could be expected to convince their educational institutions to change the starting dates for fall classes to accommodate their journey to the playa. As a result, some incredible and mature people with plenty of creative energy have consistently been denied the opportunity to become citizens of Black Rock City.

Having the event a week earlier would be very helpful for these people. And I would support the change.

I was at burning man two weeks this year.
I want a six week burning man more than ever.

I just began my last year of college and have been going to BM since 2003. Looks like you're yet to learn the one most important thing learned in college - smooth talking ;)

If her first day of school is on the Monday prior, that gives you 6 other days. Just pack your car, put on your costume, drive her to school, meet the teacher, then hit the road. :P
It's what you make it.

When I was taking classes I tried another approach to getting out of school. The truth. I told them flat out that this was very important to me, that I had a lot invested into it, and that I was going. I even had my laptop with me and I showed pictures of past events and even my most crusty instructor came around. It might not work for everyone but I had good luck with it. I even got extra points for wrapping my trip observations into a Psychology report I had to do. YMMV.

As bad as this time slot is for teachers and students, it also inhibits the "spring break" crowd from attending. It's these young folks who attract law enforcement. I got this from a LEO I chatted with at the Burn. Not everyone can be accommodated, and the current calendar placement seems to do the best job for the most people.
It ain't the hanging, it's the drop.
