Driving from Reno (1st timers)

Post by Sadken » Sun Aug 27, 2006 5:03 pm

Hello there, one week away from the start and we fly to Reno in a couple of days. We have a couple of questions and would be very grateful indeed if you lovely, lovely people would help us out with them.

1)What kind of time should we allow for the drive from Reno to the site? Is there anywhere that we can find the address for the site to look up distances on mapquest?

2)Does anybody want a lift? We are 3 very polite British people ready for all sorts of cross-cultural misunderstandings related fun and as only one of us drives thought that it might be a bit too much of a strain for her. As a result, there is a space going begging if anyone wants it....

3)We have tents to stay in, loads of water, a stove and some noodles. Exactly how likely to die horribly are we?

Many, many thanks in advance, and thanks for all your lovely help during WW2 as well.

I love British humor !

Ok, question one.... It takes roughly about two and a half hours once you're on I-80 if you drive straight thru.
Theres no formal address for the site. If you want a mapquest reference, use Gerlach , Nevada. You can practically see the festival from there, also you'll have been following people who are obviously going for the previous 120 miles. You wont get lost.

Theres a gas station/Market after to you pull off the 447 exit from 80.
You can pick up "OH SHIT I FORGOTS" either there or at the Empire store about 80 miles farther along. But dont count on these stores for everything. Try to get everything you need in Reno.
It's not a tough drive.

2) LOTS of people are lookin for rides from the Reno area. Check the "Share resources" thread on this board or just plan to stop at Twin Cities Surplus store in Reno. That's the official pick up point for people with space to help out another Burner headed to the Playa.

3) Reports from the Playa have been particularly Hot days and COLD nights. Make sure you have plenty of appropriate clothing.
If all you have are tents to sleep in and no shadecover, then make friends with your neighbors immediately upon arrival, cause your gonna bake in them during the day. -_-
Check the Surplus store and see if they have any basic shade structures or buy a small tarp, poles, ropes and stakes and make your own. Get creative, it's half the fun and your neighbors will probably help you figure out how best to secure it.
Do yourself a favor and try to find something simple to make to augment your "Noodles". Like before, get creative. You'll appreciate the variety by day 3.
Dont forget trash bags to haul your stuff off the Playa with when you leave .

Good Luck, have fun, open your minds.
Your welcome for WW2 and Thank YOU for the Beatles !
