2007 theme, ALREADY? Holy!!! The Green Man...

Holy of Holy's! Burning Man 2006 isn't even over yet and the theme for '07 is out. What an evolution! I am in utter disbelief!



Personally, I think this is a fabulous theme! I know Burning Man has been getting a lot of shit about the event's effects on the environment and I am sure that most, if not all, burners care immensely about it. Bringing the issue into the spotlight is BRILLIANT... I have a feeling this theme is going to generate an amazing amount of awareness, moreso than ever, about caring for and working with our natural environment, not against it... and I'm not just talking on the playa, but everywhere. What an awesome thought... this is going to be huge. What the heck can the press say about that? Damn those pagan, druggie, raving, hippie, naked people for caring about the environment!!! heh heh

So... what does everyone think about "The Green Man"?

Surprised me this morning, too. I like the whole Lord of the Flies look.

Didn't attend this year 'cause of our new three-week old. Watched the webcast. Apparently Current TV broadcast the burn live without any network or corporate logos, interruptions, commentary or anything, but we don't get that network.

I didn't attend this year either after 6 straight years. It was definitely tough, but I tell ya, I have a renewed appreciation for it by NOT going. I am looking forward to next year like ya wouldn't believe.

I did watch the burn live on Current TV. It was very bittersweet... very strange to see it happening live, but to not feel the energy, smell the smells, feel the heat, taste the dust... I was grateful for the broadcast and they did do a good job of keeping it non-commercial.

Zaphod, congrats on your new baby! Will you be at the burn next year?

YYYYYAAAAAAAAA-HOOOOIEEEE!!!

I have ideas already. In fact I had ideas while packing up on-Playa, in ignorance of the theme. On my way home yesterday I thought, "They should release the next-year's theme on the last day of the Burn. That would give people a whole year to work on their projects." This rocks. I'm at least as excited as I was when they announced the Vault of Heaven.

I noticed a LOT of implementation of alternative energy sources out on the Playa this year. Lots of people running bio-diesel. I'm going to use this theme as my launch point for making my camp 100% sustainably-energized. The solar lanterns, lights and spotlights worked brilliantly this year so I'm going with that as my lighting source.

One thing I thought up for next year's camp was to bring a sundial as a camp fixture. I'll bring a planter box to stick it in as well and that will be part of my greywater solution.

Thinking about bamboo camp structures...solar...NiMH rechargable batteries...grapevine wreathes...

One note: I've learnt from hard experience that silk floral garlands are quite MOOPy, so I'm going to resist bringing those with all I got.

Well, Saturday night the baby's mama looked at me and said "The man burns in 365 days!" The other day she came home with a psychedelic parachute. I'll take those to be 'subtle hints.'

...so...I've already started the art car design and rolling rootbeer saloon.

Now I have no excuse for not finding a diesel RV to rent next year (for pumping in biodiesel, of course!).

It's always been a bit disheartening that alternative energy at Burning Man is an oddity shoved into a village, rather than embraced by the entire event.

I wonder how practical it would be to set up a larger grid entirely made up of alt energy (biodiesel gennies, portable wind turbines, etc). Probably not practical but definitely a fun, over-ambituous project to strive for.

One of the first things on my mind as well. I'm going to see if I can come up with some sort of completely bamboo shade structure or "house" to live in.

If not completely bamboo I'll use cardboard as well- it's a great insulator.

Did you see the pod village from two or three years ago? Their site was at thepod.net, though now it's just an archive. Anyway, they built this elaborate array of structures out of pizza box cardboard. Really nice and comfortable, and certainly more portable than a steel geodesic dome.

More to the point, did you see the Zen yurt in Entheon Village? The wall panels were made of 12 layers of corrugated cardboard laminated together. I didn't get a chance to go inside — was always asleep whenever they did anything — but I should imagine that construction would be *very* strong and nicely insulating. That whole camp was awesome.

They came by Piss Clear and invited us over, but..... well, as our favorite quote was this year: "It's Burning Man". We never seemed to make it. I really wanted to see it too!

What will be done about all those who sit in their big ASS RV's and run the gas generators for hours when it's hot to suck up their AC and choke out us tent campers who like to experience the different elements out there, without the smell of exhaust fumes?? And all the gas powered art cars/scooters who spew exhaust fumes as they blow by you while you are walking or riding your very "green friendly bike"?
We were camped next to some very nice people in a large RV who were nice enuf not to ever run their generator while they were there since they were surronded by peoples camping in tents. They sat outside in the heat of the day right along side of us! Good Luck with the "Green Man Theme"

I don't think the BMORG expects everyone to care about the theme. People are always gonna do what they want, pay attention to only what they want to hear and disregard the rest, no matter what the theme or how much hype it gets. But for those that do care, I still think it'll be an interesting theme. It will at least begin some sort of thought process towards how things can be done in the future... "Reinventing" if you will... half the people won't give a damn about The Green Man, but seriously, for those that do, more power to them... because every little bit will help.

And those people that didn't run their nasty generator and sat out in the heat with everyone else... they freakin' rock! Too bad more people weren't as mindful of that shit!

I ran my generator for air conditioning on my second day out there. I woke up with sunstroke, vomiting and a migraine, and the AC saved me a helicopter ride to Reno to get needles stuck in my arm.

Hopefully 2007 will get people to try out green energy instead of focusing on guilty feelings. A simple green energy solution for anyone needing a generator is to rent (or buy) a diesel generator, and fill it with biodiesel.

Bently Biofuels is a good source for biodiesel near Reno. I've heard they're playa friendly, and I'm sure they'll appreciate all the extra interest in green energy this year.

Tips for avoiding that dehydration/sunstroke shit;
For every 2 or 3 beers, try 1 or 2 glasses of herbal tea, cold w/ lot's of ice! We brought lemongrass, mint, and plan ole' lemon teas, and that does the trick. Pace yourself, my friend, you'll have a much better time and wont need that AC running...O yea Mr. Mister is a good friend to have around too, or a plain ole' squirt bottle.

Agreed julie, I don't drink alcohol on the playa for exactly that reason, and after 11 times out there, I felt pretty stupid for getting that sick! Ah well.

I think the problem was running around in the sun after staying up all night to drive, instead of getting a full 8 hours sleep, then acclimating to the playa with a clear head. Sleep deprivation can really fuck you up.

We're old farts...we need at least 7 hours sleep...we camped on the outskirts this year...we still felt so good when we left on Sunday, because of adeqete sleep...we went to Tahoe for 2 days after!!

yea! Green the Man...our camp of 60+ joined with our neighbor camps and ended up with an entire esplanade block sharing a bio-diesel generator- no fumes, centralized quiet gennie hum...PLAYA BLISS!!! My guess is that you will also see a lot of tree moop after the event. Folks that cut down a bunch of oak and palm and ficus trees (or whatever) for their art project, never realizing just how quickly a lush fern can turn into dessicated, free-standing kindling out on the playa.

A few years ago, my camp got placed next to someone's nifty "forrest" - which was really pretty when it was lit with a shit-load of blacklight and stuff, but it meant that after the burn, there was nothing but dry leaves and twigs scattered all over the playa that was conveniently left for the rest of us to pick up after.

The whole idea of Burning Man being "environmental" is just laughable. There is nothing about this event that would even remotely be environmentally friendly. You can focus on things that would help, but unless we all drove electric cars up there and used solar and wind power for our boonsa-boonsa music, the event is about as "environmental" as George Bush is "intelligent."

That was hash. Most of us try very hard to to keep it clean. If the scale were tiped to the "trashers".It would be hard put to clean at all.

Harsh, but he made a good point. Upon hearing the theme my first thought was to bring a bunch of garlands and silk plants but then I thought, "Wait. MOOP. How can we avoid or at least offset this?"

Currently in the process of re-thinking my project for next year and figuring out deMOOPification contingencies. It's going to be a three-pronged thing: a patio groundtarp with an appliquéd wreath in the middle of it, some condom wreathes to hang in various locales about the city, and a small mosaic sundial.

In any event, the art people have their work cut out for them; I'm sure we're going to hear a lot of advice to watch our projects and design them so as to avoid MOOP fallout. "The Green Man" is a very seductive theme and yeah, people are gonna be thinking about plants, gardens, et alia. It can be reduced and ameliorated; driftwood trees either don't have bark or what bark is left is the type that doesn't flake off easily; remember Fern Grotto Camp? They had a whole dome filled with tender plants and a misting system. They did a good run.
