A must read re: How BM became a greek tragedy to some

Post by erikhauser » Thu Sep 07, 2006 2:08 pm

Hi all,

I feel it is important to understand that BM has, and will continue, to proceed with it's natural life cycle. In the beginning, there were the innovators and early adopters. These folks had the chance to participate in a very pure event. Over the years these innovators and early adopters began to share their experiences with their friends. This is simply part of the human experience - the need to share. This group ultimately gave way to the early majority. So, as Bm began to grow it's core also began to subtly shift. What happened this year is that the early majority had shared their experiences with the majority. This year's event was filled with early majority and the majority. This happens very innocently by sharing. So, the one's that are up in arms about the "new shift" can't blame anyone but themselves. I understand that things change. Some would say that these changes are sometimes good, and sometimes bad. However.....there is no good...there is no bad...there just is. BM is always BM. You create and control your environment at BM...you shouldn't let your environment control you.

Well said. It was nice to NOT hear this year how things "aren't how they used to be"....Our lives have changed dramatically these past years, and we have so much more we bring to the desert (bagagge).

I've surely been jaded in years past and have needed to take breaks every few years. Luckily that uneasy, (and a little unfamiliar) feeling was there for me again so that I knew to BE AWARE of as much as possible about what's happening or what isn't right.

And yes, the need to share ultimately validates, influences, and encourages all of our experiences out on the playa....as well as the ideas for next time.
I'm glad those that whine weren't so loud this time....

This was my best burn yet!

where is the tragedy you ask

Post by erikhauser » Thu Sep 07, 2006 5:11 pm

Got a little ahead of myself.:) the term comes from greek origins

"Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society. Its origins are obscure, but it is certainly derived from the rich poetic and religious traditions of ancient Greece. Its roots may be traced more specifically to the dithyrambs, the chants and dances honoring the Greek god Dionysus, later known to the Romans as Bacchus. ." - Googled :)

The tragedy that am referring to is the one where the innovators and early adoptors complain about what BM has become instead of fully embracing it. The irony is that all the changes fall squarely on our shoulders. I choose to enjoy the old and the new as I understand that I am partially responsible for some of the new. My sharing of my personal experiences at BM has certainly caused friends, friends of friends and friends of friends of friends to come:) So, i will never say it used to be better.... as all that have gone to BM have ultimately co-created it's latest state of being

I welcome change and evolution. I wasn't around in the early days of BM, but i WAS around in the early days of the rave scene, when it was so underground beautiful and had a beautiful vibe, then it got corrupted the same way all beautiful movements do, became suffocated by meth heads and asshole neo con media. In the end I think change is necessary for growth.

and one CAN control their BM experience. It takes work. The one tragedy that I won't recover from is the demise of the underground scene. I was only able to experience it for a very short time. It WAS like a dream. I guess that's why I'm so glad BM is around b/c I can capture a bit of that there although I'm much more into BM art than BM music :)

It's hard to expect any idealistic core to maintain their integrity with the hordes of bandwagon jumpers climbing on at an outpacing rate. It's all a question of the strenght of your convictions. If you have a stronger conviction to your values, your integrity will endure. If not, then your principles become watered down, adulterated with the flood of counter philosophies. That's the test every idealistic community gets put through.

I can sort of see the tragedy but I'm missing the irony entirely. Can you elaborate on that?

Finally someone who understands change. No matter what things will always change... just go with it.

And just because someone wasn't there in the beginning is no reason to be negative towards them, and just bacause they're under 30 doesn't mean they're ravers.

Don't worry about it- Once you're actually Out There, any jaded old-timers that you run into are hypocrites. Have fun. Roll in the dust. Make some art. See you soon.

I didn't get the raver reference?
Raver in the traditional sense or as in the recent rave scene?
"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"
-girl by the fire, watching a tree moved by car bumper in the bonfire

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

Careful about the raver thing. It is true that there are a lot of whiny annoying ravers that show up just to party while detracting for others experiences, but there are others who've embraced the community and are as much a part of it than anyone else. Sadly the bad ones give a bad name to them all.
