The Man Burns Tonight-Join the burner book club- Thoughts?
The Man Burns Tonight: I read it in the middle of the year and loved it. For a minute, I wanted to count it as another burn I've been to! Ha ha.
Then I read another book that was supposed tot ake place at burning man, but it was really ontly the last few chapters and i was disappointed in that book and can't even remember the name of it.

ULTRA HYPER HIDEF Burning Man-not on digital formats yet
Nice tease, Mars, for a book you can't remember the title of!
Will, you say you need to justify going to burning man.
I think if you liked Capt. Fun's book, you'll love the ultra hyper hidef version of burning man. Photography at burning man is quite limited because you quickly realize all shots are wide angle shots. The physical limitations are painfully obvious when you try to use a camera there. The visuals are amazing, but the experience is the real prize. Some of the best camps have no decoration, no flash at all. But when you leave, you always remember.
Will, what do want to do when you go?
If this crowd knows, they can tell you if you'd be wasting your time.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

Well, I guess you'll just have to read it yourself and see what you think...gyre wrote:Now I want to read it just because I find it hard to see how you can write bad fiction about this.
I suppose it's possible, but why?
After reading The Man Burns Tonight, which was great fun, I was looking for another book set at Burning Man, and this Eye of the Burning Man just didn't cut it.

I read "The Man Burns Tonight" and enjoyed it.. It really made me homesick. right now it's circulating between my friends.
Someone at burning man recommended "The Kin of Ata Are Waiting for You" to me. it's a Fiction book - not really about burning man but it does share some of the same ideals.. Communal living, animal-people hybrids, a wonderful Utopia.. this book has it all.

If The Man Burns Tonight does well enough, there will be more books like it.
I want a black rock series.
There are a million stories in the city.

On page 24 Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bar (sic) was positively mentioned. Bastard never said anything about me, good ol' Doc Pyro, but our Barbies are immortalized. Actually, that was about the only reason I bought the book. ($4.25 through Amazon.com). Oh, and you pretty much know who the murderer is 3/4 through (actually, I had it narrowed down to two), but so what. Only thing missing was a nice sprinkling of playa dust.
Hmm. I might have to get the book, then. 3/4 would be pretty good-- I usually figure them out well before that point. (Unfortunately, this skill would not translate well into a job in law enforcement-- I am usually able to guess because I have read a lot of book, and memorized the conventions.)
Well, if I can't make it to the desert for 2007, maybe I will get the book version instead!

The book doesn't even need the mystery.
I was just enjoying the event in the book.
The plot device does take an interesting look at the costumes and crowds.
It did give me that,
"I wish I'd been there feel."

If anyone is still undecided about going, read the Man Burns Tonight.
And it may help if you can't go too.
Captain Fun won't be making it this year.
It will be a little less lively.
By the way, if we buy enough copies, we can demand the next book in the series.
I want another one.
Any new books and videos out there?

This have I done, and though this work may not live

thanks gyre, i knew i could count on you.
i cant remember when, but i remember where, it was salt lake city, at the airport, when i saw this red-head, and she had "The man burns tonight" stickers all over her luggage....it turned out to be andie grace aka actionngrl.
she recognized the dust, and as we waited in line to board, she gave me a copy, which i still have.
i just assumed it was her...
god i love the reaction people on planes have when you board all full of freaky wide eyes and trailing dust wherever you go...

Frida Be You & Me
The Man Burns tonight was amusing enough, you could tell it was written by a burner, some parts were cheesy but all in all it was fine and reminded me of home.
I also took the suggestion from somewhere, and read both Dhalgren and The City Not Long After, and enjoyed them, though I have yet to tear them apart and read The City After Dhalgren, let alone burn them and read the ashes.

I read this book before I even bought a ticket. I LOVED IT. I think it prepared for the Playa better than any other post here, even better than the BMORG survival guide. The author went to BM three times before writing this book. I'm glad it's now available in electronic form, since the used paperback is now over $20.
"Eye of the Burning Man" sucked. It was written from the perspective of a self-righteous-bitter-12 stepper, who tracks down a cult of drugged-out-murderous-child-porn-producing Burners to Black Rock City.
