nice to see you back to being your normal self - i.e. negative instigator.
how about trying to be more constructive for once? i guess it would be asking too much to move beyond some juvenile oversimplification in labelling something that this board and community are OBVIOUSLY oriented around.. simply as "it sucks."
how about trying to explain why instead?
how about expaining why you believe the regionals are better?
you have an established history of being involved in conflicts on this board, please dont give me yet another reason to believe you never listened to that or even considered why.

believe me, i am holding back.
it has been raised to my attention, several times, about the nature of people who consistantly use the boards to rant without any desire nor intention for discussion. its been nice to have someplace where people can vent, and i have always believed in those who wanted some place where they could still be critical of things like the org or various groups in the hope and benefit of improving things. it also serves other functions, like having an audience to hear your issues.
but its being taken too far when its main intention is to bitch and detract from something just to even some sort of score, serve some twisted sense of vengance, entertainment based communal bashing...etc. a few have stepped foreward to positively influence things for improvement along various areas, only to have them walk in disgust from a large group of people that have no better function to serve as unhappy detractors. how many situations have improved? for the few who have stepped foreward to sacrifice thier time and effort, how many times have they been successful?
and heli, the 80% is added. i guess you dont understand the varied nature of the edit function.

Kinda touchy there aren't you? All I did was ask where the 80% was, you answered that however your snippy comment about understanding the nature of edit was more or less exactly what you are now purpoting to be the party line, eh?

See now, I've found the regionals/local decompressions to be much worse than the Burn itself. When the party happens too close to home folk haven't worked hard enough to get there. They wander around with their "city-selves," on and don't interact anywhere near as much as they do on playa. At least early in the week. I've found that the burn events I've gone to in and near cities, that were larger than private parties, just have the thumpa-thumpa and drug use without the sense of community and adventure that fill BRC. And while there is some cool art I haven't seen anything like the art that happens at the Burn, either at my local NW events, nor the SF and LA one's I've attended.
Not to diss on the local events. For those that like the thumpa-thumpa, dancing, and club like party vibe I'm sure they're great. But I like the dusty street conversations and they just don't tend to happen as much when folk can go home and shower after the party, in my experience.
And, SB, if you ever get tired of the weight of that ruby in your forehead I can recommend a relatively painless removal process. The drag of divining other's intent can end up pulling anyone down, as far as I see the world.

I dunno, the Utah regionals are pretty darn good. We've had some excellent icons and effigies and temples to burn, and some fantastic art. Also, E-11 doesn't advertise the regional much, you pretty much have to be on the yahoo group or tribe to catch the prep meetings and the dates, stricly no flyers ever. Is that true of the other regionals? I know our Decompression has a guest list and is a private party because of Utah's weird liquor laws. That weeds out some of the last minute spectators I'd imagine.
Don't mean to make "us" sound exclusive, just the reality of being unmainstream in a state like Utah produces intereting ways and means of Burning.

I'm not sure if I am allowed to say how I really feel. I don't want to be banned from this board.
This year was my least enjoyable of the 5 years I have attended Burning Man.
Never been to a regional so I best not offer my opinion.
And - seems like there is a good reason why the Momerator is upset about the meds comments. Is it a little to close to home?
The edit function was used to add the Momerator comment. Thank you.

I thought my many/mostly helpful, positive, encouraging and caring posts over the past few years indicated that I was a lot more than that. Maybe you haven't been around that long. Maybe it was supposed to be a private message. I love you anyway; thanks for moderating the board for us (sincerely). Hugs.
I'm not really saying Burning Man sucks.spectabillis wrote:rant without any desire nor intention for discussion
I would like to sincerely encourage everyone to look into what regional events are in their areas and attend them. I went to Burning Man six times before I went to a regional, thinking, "How could it be as good?" I found that regionals are fucking great. In fact, in *some* ways they're better than Burning Man. The scale is much smaller and they don't have the same quantity or variety of people, art and music, but it's more intimate, safer, and the vibe and attitude are, in my opinion, much better.
EOM!!!

How close are you talking about? For the past two years, the North Texas regional has always been at least 2 hours away.Ron wrote:See now, I've found the regionals/local decompressions to be much worse than the Burn itself. Well, once I realized (years ago) that Burning Man is in here (pointing to my chest; yeah just like the Fifth Element) then it didn't matter where we went.Ugly Dougly wrote:Regionals should be different indeed, because they're not Burning Man. It's good that they're not parrots.

It ain't the hanging, it's the drop.
It varies from inside town itself to a few hours away. Just my observation but the regionals I've gone to were more like just another loud rave party, while in BRC itself some folk are more willing to meet new people and have actual conversations. All of this in my own experience, of course.HughMungus wrote:....How close are you talking about? For the past two years, the North Texas regional has always been at least 2 hours away.

Went to my 9th PDF (Playa del Fuego) a couple of weeks ago. We sold all but about 30 tickets and I will admit that we had a lot bailouts due to the weather but a solid core of about 600+ that showed up in the rain, the mud and the wind. We did not have as many art projects as we do in the Spring, but part of that is burnout from Burning Man, a lot of us are active with theme camps and art on the Playa and when you have to travel 3000 miles to get there it takes a bit out of you.
We do not advertise, we have an 800 ticket cap and in the Spring always sells out. While we our site is close to Washington DC and Baltimore we bring in people from as far away as North Carolina and New Hampshire -- Note: Bunker is setting up an NH burn if you are in the New England states check the regionals on the main page.
I tell people that Regionals are Burning Man writ small, granted the only one I have gone to is PDF. We have random art, supported art, theme camps and a shared community. What more do we need?
Hugh, did you at one point post as Dallas? If so PM me, this reguards a 5'10"+ ginger haired (long hair) female on the Playa this year.
