Why does BM ORG hand out MOOP at the front gate?

Post by blyslv » Mon Sep 11, 2006 11:42 am

The Who, What, Wear and When guide had three peices of advertising in it. There was a sticker -- BM 2006 -- (Collect the whole set!). There was a post card to mail into the nice folks at BRAF to get on their mailing list (!); and there was a flier promoting the good works of the BRAF.

Hee is what the BM ORG (with the Earth Guardians) ask us to do, among other things:

"Avoid handing out paper announcements. "http://www.burningman.com/on_the_playa/ ... trash.html

They want us to "leave no trace." To help us LNT, they ask us to not hand out paper announcments. But they go ahead and hand out their own!

So I ask the Earth Guardians about this apparent hypocrisy. They were very defensive and essentially said that if the ORG was handing it out it was for a good purpose, and we didn't have to accept the guide anyway.

I call bullshit and hypocrisy. I didn't know about the BM ORG generated MOOP until after I set up my camp and opened it up. And there it is, three peices of junk mail from a for-profit corporation supposedly set up to counter the excessive advertising and consumerism in the dominant culture.

Then they ask us for two hours time to pick up theirs and other's garbage. When I see the earth gaurdians slavishly defending the action of their Dear Leader, it just makes me more cynical and it makes me feel like a sucker for buying into in the first place. They don't believe the snakeoil they're selling, they just want us to believe it so they can continue throwing their awesome desert party and get us to pick up.

The ideals of the BM ORG are dying a death of a thousand cuts, and most of them are self inflicted. Everytime they make a compromise to appease the sensibilities of the dominant culture (mostly LEO), a little bit more of what made the event precious dies as well. As it becomes more concerned with raw survival instead of any sort of "experiment", the Event will become more hypocritical and founded on lies.

I didn't drop it. I took responsibility for my actions, and drove away with a car full of garbage bags, just like thousands of other people do.

What I don't do is ask people to do one thing while I myself do something completely contrary to what I'm asking other people to do.

<sheesh> indeed.

Why is he posting this rant over here when he could post over on the 3playa and know that ActionGrl would read it? None of the LLC members seem to post over here anymore so why not go where you know you'll have an audience...one that might be able to do something about it?

um, an unhealthy need for attention is my guess.

OH yeah, that could be it.

Maybe he should spend the 07 event providing an example by standing just beyond the greeters with recycling bins or something.

Last night I unwrapped a peice of paper from my playa treasures and alot of shattered glass poured out. That was one "playa trinket" that didn't end up as moop at least.

Blyslv: I have a recycling container and $5 for you if you're interested in taking on some kind of gate moop recycling effort next year. The $5 doesn't have to be returned either.

why not just refuse it? chances are if they end the year with 10,000 extra, they'll order less the next year.

we usually get one per car. i usually dont read through any of it until long after the event.

im going to go look for the sticker now... thanks for pointing that out.

Hey, just because I don't talk doesn't mean I'm not reading. Maybe I just keep quiet until I actually have something to say.

And we do have a feedback address, you know. Posting actual feedback on the ePlaya is not the recommended way to get it to us...there used to be an "ask the staff" thread, but it wasn't all that well-used.

playasnake, the pleasure was all mine, glad I could help.

actiongirl, thanks for your words, but I was really just interested in sparking a dialog amongst participants. I don't think the ORG is really that interested in what I have to say.
