Information About Playa Art Needed...

Post by Lead_Into_Gold » Fri Oct 27, 2006 8:41 pm

Hello there.

I am new to the eplaya, so I apologize if this isn't a good place for this post.

I have a beautiful idea for an Art project for 2007 that I REALLY want to see on the Playa. I can afford to do it, I think, but if someone else liked the idea and wanted to build it perhaps better or bigger, or with fire effects, or just in general something that I cannot do, I hoped that there would be a place to discuss this. Is there a place to submit blue-prints, or talk about art and the like?

Basicly, this piece is going to get out to the playa one way or another, but I would love it if people who like the idea, or want to add or help with it, would aid me in the journey.

Any input will be appreciated.

WEll, last year was my first placed playa piece, and it was fairly simple, in idea, submission, and execution.

Start with the guidelines so you know what the project MUST incorporate for safety, security etc.:

As for people helping or funding, well, I don't know of any central forum, perhaps others do know; in the meantime you may want to find burners in your area who are interested in your project. Just having a nifty idea and sharing blueprints won't get much done here, you're going to be hands on if you want your project completed.

And give us a least a freakin' HINT, eh?

I forgot to mention that.. kind of important i guess, eh?

I am on the search now for folks in my area who can help.

What I want to do is something like this:

I want to make a single stone-hinge like gateway (the three stones) but I want it do be around 13-20 feet tall, black metal. I want either lights or fire on the inside, and one side will have poetry relevant to our connection to nature and the loss of it over time, and the other I wanted to place various interpratations of face-sized greenmen from all over the world with either fire or green eyes, depending upon money. I can do lights a lot safer and cheaper then fire of course. Other ideas would be a projection of the day-time playa in the middle of the gateway, so at night time it would look like a gate-way to a daytime playa... I just need some logistical help.

But basicly that is the plan I have, some welding and assembley required. But I really like the idea of seeing a gateway of poetry or greenman faces out on the playa at night.

Coming from a multi-year veteran...

One of the first things I learnt (rather painfully) was "attempt no project that you couldn't pull off by yourself. Possibly as late as two weeks' notice."

BELIEVE in the Playa Flake Factor. It is real. It can hurt you. It can hurt you badly.

My suggestion would be: Find the group first, and come up with something by synergy.

I would have to agree with the do-it-yourself factor of burning man. My camp is a group project of people that have been doing the camp between 4 and 8 years. Reliable people. I am doing an instalation on the playa this year that will be all me. If anybody helps it will just be a luxury, but I can do it all by myself.

As for your idea, it sounds interesting, but out of focus. It can go in several directions.

1. Grated metal (the stuff they make huge bbq's out of) shaped like stones, with flame effects inside.

2. Actual Rock, like the temple of gravity.

3. Some other material that is lighter, and easier to work with. Maybe make a statement with recycled oil cans. Stacks and stacks of them. I think Quakerstate is still in a green can. Quite a statement.

I like the idea of the Green Man faces, but I don't see how they incorporate into the rest of the idea. Big glowing green eyes would be very cool though. Maybe you should focus more on that aspect.

What is this an entrance to?

I would suggest using recycled materials to combine the natural resource part of the theme with the green man face part of the theme. Green glass bottle bottoms for eyes, etc. I'm more of a lighting fan, than a fire fan, and it's a lot easier to work with. If you use glass, and other refracting materials, you can do some cool effects with alternating light patterns and shadows. I'd like to see some sketches, you should post a link here so people can see what you are aiming at.

Can I vote for fire? ;)

I would agree with previous poster: actually getting anything done out there is an entirely different proposition from either planning it, or even a dry run in the back yard. Factor in not enough sleep and extreme conditions, and you have a better idea of the logistics involved.

The concept so far sounds cool. But as a gateway, what would it lead to?

Did you see the series of doors that got smaller and smaller? I couldn't fit through the last few. I like to think they led to more fire.
