Bringing parents?
Bringing parents?
As I get older I'm getting closer to my parents and understanding them more. I'm starting to think my dad would really get into Burning Man. He hasn't been involved in anything at all like it, at least not in the last 40 years, but I feel like a lot of the tendencies that got me interested in it came from him. He's in his 60s and in good health.
Has anyone attempted something similar? How did it go?

Yea, in '04, and had a great time (he's about that same age).
It was just the two of us, and we talked about it before hand.... set some ground rules, like....
Our camper was just a base camp we both set up, but no expectations for camp cook, schedules, etc....
We both kind of came and went as we pleased... neither feeling they had to be with the other always (unless we wanted to)...
And of course the infamous... What happens at BM, stays at BM....
It was fabulous, and we spend a lot of real quality time together. Both of us met many new friends (as always), together and separate, and were able to talk and reminisce later...

My Aunt Pat has been considering Burning Man for a while now, and not because of me, she's known about it for years. She was going to go with her fiance, but he had a massive coronary a couple years ago and died at Christmas. Now she's moved to Tulsa with her new boyfriend, she delights in telling me all about his various piercings, and he's been talking Burning Man also.
She's in her 70s!

There's no way Mom would go. But I'd love to take my aunt. I think she'd get a kick out of it. She makes nichos and a lot of Dia de los Muertos art and she's having a show up in Seattle right now.

Old timers
A friend of mine brought his dad last year.....we could not keep track of him....I would see an art car go by out on the deep playa, and there is this guys dad, hanging off the side. Fuckin A if he did not show us how, the old timer can ride a bike, and sleep in a tent like a pro. You could just tell he had an awesome time.....fuck people came looking for him.
Awesome guy he was.

Laika and me went on a ride.

Of course the converse to this is also true. I'm knocking on the door of my sixth decade, yet am totally comfortable participating in the Burning Man scene, both environmentally and socially. It would be me taking my adult children (mid-twenties) to BM! But then I came out of the 60's and over the years have enjoyed keeping a window seat on the Zeitgeist Express--you just have to be willing to changes buses from time to time!
That's not to say you'll find me at an all night rave (that would be pathetic) or a theme camp of the prurient persuation, but BM is so multifaced that there is certainly something there for anyone compelled to be there in the first place.
