Someone was trying for this at the 2006 Burn, as I recall, so he or she has been firsted.

That would be me.
And you could call it art, but I don't.
Lots of art is visible from space, you just have to look for it. I did end up making something on the playa this year. Whether it was art is up to the viewer to decide. I certainly had a lot less money behind my effort. If I had nearly unlimited funds I certainly would have done it their way.

The Colonel's hair looks gay... but in a good way. Not as greasy as the old chicken.
Art cred: Georgie Boy 2011: www.mutantvehicle.com/georgie_boy.htm ; Ein Hammer 2010; Fluffer 2009; Zsu Zsu 2008; U-Me 2007; Mantis 2006; MiniMan and Pikes Of Paranoia 2005; Time Machine Mutant Vehicle 2004. www.MutantVehicle.com
Seems like there's confusion between art and commerce/advertising. I don't want to get into that little cat fight or the issue of what defines art.
In any case, I'd argue that the piece does NOT represent the first art piece viewable from space to wit I direct you of Robert Smithson's 1970 piece Spiral Jetty which is quite viewable from space.

If the original post is about the largest art piece in Nevada that's visible from space I'd argue that Michael Heizer's City not only pre-dates the Colonel but dwarfs him by at least one order of magnitude. Behold...

Perhaps they're ready to take some to-go orders from a fucking long ass way away.
I'd quite forgotten Robert Smithson, and I hope wherever he is, he's getting a kick out of satellite images of his work, which is almost lost to us mere earthbound mortals.
And for the sarcasm impaired, "well, you can call it art" is a hint that the subject line might not be meant literally. Maybe. Or maybe not. Who can tell?

I'm sure that other things have been visible before Spiral Jetty.
Nazca lines, perhaps? Maybe there's some qualifying archtectural pieces?
Of course, it might also depend on what resolution we're talking about. So potentially as our capacity for seeing increases, older and older art will qualify.

Oh sure there's LOTS of stuff visible from space built over the ages. The Great Wall of China, the Pyramids, Aztec mountainside rock stackings etc. I'd argue that they actually don't represent art but instead have other probably religious significance. My posts were to draw attention to large pieces visible from space that are by definition art and art only.I'm sure that other things have been visible before Spiral Jetty.

BTW, Smithson died in a plane accident back 1973 while scoping out another area to install a piece.

Send it out to Eridani-7 - extra crispy, please!
So you can see it when viewing Google Earth, and maps etc. People are also starting to paint advertising on rooftops for same purpose. Gag.Ugly Dougly wrote:Who is KFC advertising to??? The crew of the ISS??? I don't think so, they're having their fried chicken out of a tube.
