Year Round Burner Town or Neighborhood

Post by EricMagic » Thu Nov 16, 2006 8:38 pm

Ok some seemily simple questions to truly ponder.

For the sake of this post, suppose and assume the Burning Man Event or a Regional Burn was allowed to occur every weekend in the same place, or it was to occur everyday for a year. Would this assumption constitute a Burner Town or Burner Neighborhood, or is it something else? Would this assumption or exercise of long term Burning Expression Event be considered a religion, or new lifestyle?

What should define a Burner Town or Burner Neighborhood? Is it like San Fran, or Sante Fe, or Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, or Dr. Suess's City, or Salvador Dali's Unfinished Masterpiece?

Does anyone know of a successful year round Burner Town (BT) or Burner Neighborhood that is beyond a stereotypical Hippie Commune?
Or do you know of a Burner Town that is active most every weekend? If not, do you wish to start one?

What do you think should the purpose of either a Year Round Burner Town or a Every Weekend Burner Town?

How about we just make it a little longer...10 days instead of 7?

THe burn takes place in a liminal time called "vacation" in which the human psyche soars. For various reasons it is impossible to maintain year round.

Is Harmony, CA still for sale? I heard years and years ago that the whole town, lock stock 'n barrel, was on the market for about $3.5 million. Probably more now. My gaming geek buddies were all huppy and stoked to get the money together, move in en masse, and institute a running, 24-7 omnibus World of Darkness LARP and become a live action roleplaying and guerilla street theatre mecca. I was going to take over the bistro and play a Day Pryio Ceilicann Bastet.

There is another small town about a half-hour west of here called Walton. It's on the way to the coast and when I drove through a month ago, there were "For Sale" signs everywhere and the Walton General Store and Post Office has been on the market forever. I think most if not all of the 'burgh is for sale; know anyone with about a million unattached dollars?

I think wherever you have art, independent spirits and music, you're gonna have hippies. That's the way it is in certain sections of Eugene, and flakiness aside it's not a bad social structure to follow.

Why don't we start with a six week burning man?

Yes - I like what I see, hear

(Sound - imagine funny voice now) Hmmm, very tasty and interesting. Yes, more ideas keep them flowing into my brain, your brain, and the Burner Brain Collective.

(Sound - Now back to your typical imagined voice or silence)

Nice news and ideas especially about different collective efforts or collaboration dreams. We need to think really bold and big, since overall the Burner Types tend to be on the outskirts of normal society and any collaboration and teamwork helps. Exception to the Burner Types being on the outskirts might be the San Fran CA area.

Anyway, some things to think about. At the very least we can start to focus on helping one another out via supplies, feedback, this ePlaya, and so on. Imagine the possibilities if certain Burner Types could help found, direct and run either a whole town, or neighborhood, or a county? Just imagine what sort of creative actions are needed to make the imaginations come true?

Wow, very colorful. Oh well, now back to work.

I remember a few months ago someone posted on here and said, "Let's take over Crockett!" You know, that town surrounding the C&H sugar factory on the hill overlooking the Carquinez Straits?

I'm not sure what form it would take but if I were a citizen of said town I think I'd take the town of Bolinas, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolinas,_California CA to heart as far as discouraging the weekend visitors.

This concept sounds like a slightly more flamboyant version of the Free State Project.

You're basically talking about Pirate Utopias. Albeit a Utopia where the pirates all wear sunglasses and drive really wacked-out cars.

Maybe the default should not favor conformity.

That is, if you try to paint your house purple, some people might like it and some might not, but the default of society is to favor the status quo, and purple is out. Curiously, if you tried to hang a big anti-abortion, dead-baby banner on your house, you'd probably get away with it because it would defy free speech to not allow it.

Thus, the best way to get more Burner-like year-round is to ensure that conformity is not favored -- not in favor of non-conformity, just not in favor of conformity.
May your deeds return to you tenfold,

That's just playing with semantics. It's like asking, "If I write a book about failure, and no one buys it, does that make it a success?"
