DMV open yet?

Post by Sync » Mon Nov 20, 2006 8:34 pm

Anybody know if the DMV is open yet? I have a plan and am trying to get a response so that I know if it's worth spending the time building. So far I have not gotten any email responses from them, and was wondering if they were not concidering designs yet.

Thanks

I've never gotten an email response (not counting the official application) from them even when they were open. Registration usually doesn't open until sometime in the Spring.

What's the idea? Several of us here have been through the process and might be able to tell you whether your idea is likely to qualify.

Mostly they seem to be concerned with how well you've thought out these two things - how will you make it look like something other than a car, and how will you operate it safely? If it's safe and sufficiently not car-like there's a good chance you'll get a registration sticker.

The idea is pretty simple, and based on how much I have enjoyed meeting people on the playa the two years I have gone. I want to create a taxi that can efficiently take myself and two passengers anywhere they need to go. The idea is to be able to set up a mobile taxi stand, cruse the open playa for tired walkers, folks carrying ice and so forth, and provide a free ride.

Concept: Imagine one of those metal backyard swing sets for kids. In the center, mounted by a ground-level cross tube, is a child’s motorcycle for propulsion. At each corner of the frame is an industrial swivel wheel. The child swings are replaced by heavy aluminum lawn chairs. Its painted candy striped red and white, wrapped in el wire, has headlights, and a “TAXIâ€

How many times have you had to pick up the pieces of torn up kids in a car wreck? What if it was your kid that died?

I can't quite visualize how the motorcycle will fit in, but as long as it's sufficiently hidden or integrated in a way that it doesn't just look like a storebought kids motorcycle with a swing set welded to it, I don't see any reason you wouldn't get a sticker. There have been similar things before, like moving porch swings and such.

You might also look into power wheelchair equipment - you could drive the wheels on the side like a tank. You would have to deal with batteries, though.

The bike is store bought, it sits dead center. I suppose I could try to think of an additional way of disguising it, though I’ve seen standard vehicles integrated into other concepts. As far as power chair parts go, I have a smaller project using one already completed, and had one on the playa in 05. Batteries are exactly the problem. Takes too much energy to move significant distances, and charging from a generator is actually more wasteful than running a small gas drive motor directly. A lot of energy is lost in conversion. I suppose I could turn the bike into a carousel horse or something.

Far be it for me to judge. I sure wouldn't know anything about poor taste.

I'm not saying it wouldn't get registered, just that you'd be near the edge and at the mercy of whatever volunteer hottie gets assigned to you. Maybe disguise it to look like one of those drug store kiddie rides? Or hide it completely and relocate the controls to a stationary swing? In any case, I don't see in reason not to start building at any time and get the application in as soon as they're available so you can make adjustments if necessary.

we wee looking at coveringa motorcycle with a horse costume, and making a buggy to pull behind it. We tried the concept, and am going to have to ballast the bike with about 300 pounds to keep traction.

li like the swing set idea. make sure you X brace it somehow swing sets are supposed to be static and are usually pretty flimsy in motion.

Well, you can't decorate a horse as a motorcycle at bunringman either.

May I suggest Haute August Nites?

or you can just ignore it like most everyone else. with heli and joel its more about vainly trying some toe-hold grasp to even a petty score.

on topic: its really too early for volunteers to get back in the groove, not just dmv. most dont volunteer year round.

Zues, do you remember "esteroids"??????
*You* suggest that *I* ignore anything in bad taste or ill form. Better you suggest the moth lay blinders on it's brow as it views the scorching light lest it be burned - or warmed by its shine.

You big silly.
