FREE SPRINGS.. 400 SERIES STAINLESS.. MADE BY ME!!
While teaching myself the art of spring making with my lathe last night I wound up with 4 beautiful springs. They are similar to a coilover spring used on a motor vehicle. The ends are rough ground flat and they work good. They are in new condition and I really don't need em so if anyone has a use for em drop me a line. I will measure them up tonight and post more details later. Oh yeah.. They are FREE to ANYONE that will put em to good use.

Sounds like a fun little project. I can't think of anything I could do with them considering the many projects I have going. I would like to see pictures and know a little more about the process you use to make them. I would have thought they would typically be made of a rod twisted into shape. These are coil springs, right? It's interesting that you'd use a lathe from solid stock or tube? Does that leave a lot of scrap metal? Is the leftover material squared or rounded? I'm a bit of a machinist when I find the time so I find this fascinating.
Ideas for projects that accentuate the spring(s):
Make a cool, possibly clear platform to jump on and mount one near each corner.
Make a spring loaded cannon with a lexan barrel to shoot tennisballs etc.
Make your art bounce if someone pushes, sits on, leans against, etc. it.
Playa bumper cars?

I use the lathe to hold my fixture in the chuck. The rod gets wrapped around the fixture.. its a very tricky process and dangerous as well. I believe there are new methods but I wanted to learn the old fashioned way. I'll try to get a picture put up somewhere and post it when I get back from work tomorrow morning.

Gone.. one of the local tuner kids stopped by today and saw them. Offered me 200 bucks so I sold em. I'm planning on making some bigger ones in a few months for a truck. If I have extras/leftovers I will post again for the art car and art installation builders.
A tuner is someone who "tunes" their car for street racing. Half of what I make in the machine shop winds up on custom cars and motorcycles. I made some of the springs to fix up my chevy aveo. I could make some more if someone needed some for a project. I can make 4 more without going out of pocket. FWIW I can get small stainless sheetmetal discs about 5 inches around for free by the shitload. I only managed to snag the rods because the material vendor gave us double what we ordered and never picked up the extras after giving a credit.MikeVDS wrote:What's a tuner kid?
