I need help with a project for 2007

Post by angus23 » Thu Nov 23, 2006 11:44 pm

Before you read on check out some photos of 2006.

Here is my idea,
I want to send cups to people to create art inside each cup. They will then send them back and I will reasemble cuphead for 2007. I also want to have a party on the playa with all of the artists who have participated. The part I need help with is setting up a small web site to display the prossess, but I do not know how to make a web site. If anyone would like to get involved and help create a community around Cuphead, let me know.

I think making the cups would be more fun at the event. Maybe you could have a small theme camp based around the idea. It could be an expensive undertaking. Even if only 1 out of 40 participants show up thats 1000 cups and supplies. What kind of supplies would you use? Having a clay setup would be really nice, that way everyone could make the cup itself unique! Draggin a kiln along would add to the cost but would be well appreciated. Good luck with the project!

I don't suppose your own a record store, do you? On our way up the coast after the 2006 event we stopped for lunch in Eugene, OR; I was perusing a small used record store and notice two guys behind the counter working on something like your CupHelmet. I was about to ask them but let it roll, you know, one of those post-playa-synchronicities....

That wasn't me. I'm in San Francisco. My idea is to be a kind of mobile gallery for people who would like to contribute art to the Playa but don't know where to start. That is how I felt in 2005.
I had the idea for this project when cleening up after a party. I was picking up all of the used red cups when I noticed that they fit together in such a way that would create a sphere. I thought about what I could do with it and eventualy it turned out to be a helmet. When I wore it on the Playa and in the default world, the respose from people was the same. They would come over and ask me about it and take pictures. They liked it. The response led me to the next idea.

Burning man is all about building community, so I would like to invite people to create art in Cuphead. And have an event on the Playa where all of the contributing artists can meet. Of course I would wear Cuphead at other times too. And this time there will be art in each cup for people to see.

Thanks for the idea Toolmaker. I like the idea of making it on the Playa and making a connection with people.

Reminds me of my art school days....Lots of kids had funky light fixtures made out of cups and Xmas lights. you could probably make some playa-scale ones from a whole shitload of IKEA plastic trash cans, riveted together.

I had the thought of making a huge dome out of the largest trash cans I could find. It might make a cool theme camp.

It'd certainly be interesting-looking....You'd have to cover the open ends of the cans, or be content with them filling with playa dust! If the cans are relatively straight-sided, you could probably make a fairly big dome with a hundred or so. And if you marked out where they make contact with each other you could stick Velcro tape onto them and avoid hardware issues except around the openings.
I'll bet the Highway Cone Dome guys would have some good advice about this kind of construction.....

We can use the trash can lids to cover them. It would also make good storage containers for the week. I can tell you that I stood in strong Playa wind and the shape of Cuphead acts like a golf balls dimpled surface and breakes the wind resistance. I didn't feel the wind pushing me over. It might be nice to live in a structure with the same properties. Is anyone interested in making this happen?

I also think it would be a great playa project. I would love to participate. But the end product might be un-wearable.. It might end up like 50 lbs. Or combustible.
