The body of James Kim has been found in the wilderness of south Or. coast range. His wife and childern were located alive 4 days ago. Peace to his family.

I have never seen a man hunt of this caliber in my life time.

I was so afraid that was how it was going to turn out after they found his family on Monday.

He did a good thing keeping those people alive for 7 days. Apparently he figured they were going to perish anyway so him going alone for help was their only shot. In so doing a cell phone tower managed to pick up his phone signal for a few seconds. It was long enough to tell rescue crews where to look. That's how they found the car and his family two days after he set off.

He didn't make it, but it might have been worse if he hadn't tried. Rescue crews were looking in a completely different area until they got that cell phone signal.

Fuck. I heard about this on the news just earlier this evening. I'm glad at least the wife and kids are alive. Too bad he didn't make it. :(

(I didn't know any of them, but it is sad anyway.)

Mr Kim's lose brought out a strong lesson point. GPS's only give a one demenson map. You must also have a BLM terrain map in steep wildernness. This is some thing most of did not know/realize.

I'm a wilderness person. You just can't be prepared enough all the time. We're human. God bless the surviving family.

Probably isn't a bad idea to have one of those satellite distress beacons with you if you know you are going to be out of cell phone range for any length of time. Some of the newer units have built-in GPS that reports your location within 200 meters or better.

They run about $200 and you register the thing but it might be worth having if you are regularly out in the wilderness.

Or a satphone. OK, they're expensive, but if you're out in the middle of nowhere... Locator beacon as well. Actually, 2 so when the first dies in 48 hours you punch the second one. Gives rescures 4 days to pick up the signal, home in, and find you. But,,, and this is the point... do you ever go out on a drive into a desolate area without a locator beacon, sat phone, and a weeks emergency supplies (not counting BRC)? Like... umm... the Sierras? The Rockies over I-70? How about even a couple gallons of water, some pemmican bars, a way to start a fire (which, thank god, they had), shelter, 1st aid, extra clothes, maps, etc? I'm not talking our annual BRC jaunt... how about on that hour trip in the hills to meet the family?

This is all Tuesday Quarterbacking. All I hope (having been a survival skills instructor myself) is that this wakes people up to the basics of (1) traveling in the winter, and (2) survival skills for you, er, them and their family. Then, at least, Mr. Kim will not have died in vain...

Grampa and I always carry a mini camp in our vans. I have ever sence we first got the kids. You should have seen some of the junk we drove back then. I have out fitted the kids cars now. Grampa and I are both pron to just take the next road. I hi centered once, luck would have it. I had a come-along. SO with that and a jack I could pull the car off the hi point.

I rented one of those becons a couple of time while climbing in a national park.

The old man and i are getting up in years. Guess we should each buy a becon. It's not like I could crawl out with a broken leg any more. The old man would be happy to die in the outdoors he loves so much.

Lessons learned, painfully.

Stay put. The wife and kids were rescued. They were on a road. A car is easy to spot.

Gather firewood if you're bored. It's always important to keep busy, and to feel that you're doing something that helps your situation.

They were eating berries, but they could have also eaten Douglas Fir needles. Yeah, bitter, but a better taste than death's.

I wonder if they were following one of Yahoo's wonderful maps. Sometimes the routes that it plots uses the most unreliable tracks.

Even sadder had he just walked up the road only another half mile, he would have found a cabin that could easily been seen from the road.

I went through a similar situation. Different circumstances, but the same
bad conclusion; finding him dead in a remote wilderness. There were so many questions, theories and unfinished personal business. The never-ending second guessing and dis-belief...You can run the facts through your head over and over again and only come up with more questions...what if:, could have:, should have:, if only:,...an endless loop of memories and questions that his friends and loved ones will run through their minds and hearts for a Long time before they can finally make some personal sense of a seemingly senseless thing, if they ever do...

Love them ferociously while you can.

...I hope James is remembered for the wonderful, loving individual that he was til the end of his cherished life.
My heart goes out to his family and friends.
