With Cooling Man, discussions of carbon footprints, the 2006 Man and Temple scaled back a bit in size from previous years, and the rendering of the 2007 Man looking minimalistic, does anyone think BM HQ is thinking of scaling back the Man-base and Temple, or making them contain less wood, in an effort to emit less pollution?
I understand that "Team Uchronia" pledged to plant as many trees as required to "pay for" the greenhouse gases emitted when the Waffle burned. was that true, andif so, was that a condition set in place by BMORG?

I am a very environmentally concerned person; however, I must admit that I will be very disappointed if the burning man temple is scaled back. 2006 was my first year and I absolutely loved the burning of the Man. Can't we all just plant a few more trees to compensate for the burning of the temple and man!!!! Hell...Lets take it up a few stories

I have thought that reduction in footprint and materials is the way to go.
A steel framed man with articulated joints held in position with large - 6x6 wooden pins would be great, the pins burn far enough the man collapses.
One of our sidelines is to weld bridge beams, struts, radio towers etc. I figured out last year that a 60' steel man would weigh 18 tons, be totally reuseable every year, and take 488 man hours to cut, weld, and preassemble for delilvery. Hell we would do it at cost.
With the steel man frame you can attach all sorts of pyrotechnics to the outside, and wrap it in a veneer of whatever burnables you want.
If you did not know it was a steel frame - you would not know the difference. This bad boy would last for at least 10 years- how much lumber does the man take in ten years?
Just my thoughts on a place to start for renewables.

How about we do what we can the rest of the year and blow a bunch of shit up at burningman?
Realistically, what happens at burningman means nothing globally. If you're really concerned about the environment, stop fighting stupid little nitpicking fights and work on pushing economically feasible, clean energy and realistic ways to preserve global plant life, etc. Trying to force insignificant numbers of people into doing relatively insignificant things hurts the cause by losing much more support than the fraction of a fraction of a percent that global pollution was reduced. Sure "every bit counts" but so does it when it comes to support for projects like initial funding of alternate energy sources that would be much more cost effective in the long run, etc.
Yes we should all do our parts, ride bikes, recycle, use as few resources as we can, but forcing it on others doesn't help IMO.

good to see someone post on this topic...otherwise I was going to have banter back-n-forth (and ultimately get in a flame war) with myself! But, hey, what's new?
Just looking at the preliminary design for The Man 2007 (which I will call the Big Green Tarp Man) it looks like the designer was facing either serious cash constraints (which I doubt) or his marching orders were to use as little wood as possible. I also note that in the write-up the surrounding trees are to be made of re-usable and recycled materials.
I, too, think what we do on the Playa hardly amounts to a tinker's dam globally. But I do note that some could shout "hypocrite" at Burning Man as emitting green-house gases hardly constitute "Leave No Trace." To those I would say "good point, now piss off." The reusable Metal Man sound pretty intriguing, but I have to say I would miss the smell and the crunch and crackle of wood as the pyre consumed the Man.
By the way, who selects the person or team to build the Man or the Temple and is it true that David Best is retunrning to the Playa in 2007?
