Segway ATV (off-road, trail-ready, etc.)

Apparently, this is for real - an all-terrain Segway with beefy, playa-ready tires. The photo on the site shows a guy with a bedroll and such riding in the woods on his Segway.

You'll make lots of friends on a $5000 toy with a smug on your face at Burningman.

I've seen people at burning man on segways, and they did have a smug on. :->

I would use one if someone gave it to me.
As I get older, my self-identification with the poor, trodden working class is becoming less important to me.
However, I don't have that kind of money.
If I was rich, I could ride around in the Pope-Mobile shamelessly.

Eh, if I had $5,000 I wanted to blow on one, I well might. No business of yours is it? Some of us can't walk more than half a mile, deformed spine bones thank you very much.

I hate to get all burnier-than-thou but what is wrong with a bike?

I am not down on the whole non-human powered human transport systems but a person on a Segway at Burningman looks like a dork. I just might think it has to do with the marketing of the product and not the product itself.

Whatever. If you can afford it and bring it then use it.

Segways aren't dangerous, aren't loud, and if someone were to ride one across the playa it wouldn't negatively impact me in any way. Therefore I could care less if someone chooses to bring one, just like if they spend the same amount of money to bring an RV.

Actually, we have a four wheeled bike with boat seats. My spine (insert lengthy laundry list of ailments here) no longer allows me to sit a conventional bike seat without serious pain and then numbness and pain in more places. Walking long distances is the same thing. Pedaling gets iffy. My back may degenerate to the point I won't be able to navigate in traditional ways, One hopes it will be much, much later rather than sooner.

I agree with the use your feet or ride your bike. The yahoos flying around on their go-peds are already dangerous enough. I can just imagine some person riding around drunk or high on their segway. Those things are enough of a pain to drive when you are not drunk or high. Also if you can afford a $5,000 segway then why don't you just build yourself an art car? Just my 2 cents.

I think a Segway would be kinda' cool, and I think it compares favorably to all the go-ped scooters.
Why get so pissy that someone spends $5k on it? A lot of us drop more than that on BM in whatever way, and the Segway isn't necessarily a BM-only item.
Who's worried about looking like a dork at BM???!!!! Jeez, think about THAT for a minute...

A segway is easier to trailer than an art car? And needs no license? I've seen an art segway, done up like a London phone booth, one of those red ones. Pretty cool actually.

Plus, who cares what's on my burning man shopping lists? Is there a price limit? If segways were cheap, would they then be burny enough? If I told you what I paid for the rhoadescar, would I then become less of a burner because I couldn't build it myself? Yes, bikes and feet are good, and noisy go-peds irritate me to no end, but why does that make a segway bad?

The only thing I have a peeve against are people who ride things too fast and kick up dust.

To those who are worried how a segway would make you look, chill out and don't be so judgemental. Part of BM is what it is because lots of money is spent on cool stuff. And hopefully no one give a fuck what you think they look like anyway, which is one of the reasons I love BM. :)

I had enough trouble with my electric horse.. I had to take it completly apart to clean it..A segway has a lot more stuff to clean than that.. It's not like just blow it off and that's good.. I had to disassamble small switchs and clean them.

I saw a couple Segways at night last year on the Playa, done up with El Wire to look like seahorses. They looked great!

I think you are right. It's all about the dust as you make your way down the hot avenue. It doesn't matter how beautiful you are, if you are kicking up dust everyone will hate you.

I'll, uh, third that! Those things are just another form of transportation. (BTW, I really like the Roman chariot and the British telephone booth!)

those segway are the same price as a heavy duty electric wheel chair. Think I'll go for one of them.

Okay, so if the Segway is too aggravating, here's a motorcycle powered by 24 chain saw engines:
http://hight3ch.com/post/chainsaw-powered-motorcycle/

There's a YouTube video, too -- too much foreplay, though, and not enough shots of the motorcycle in action. I suspect that's because it's not all that thrilling, although I did enjoy watching them hand crank each one of the 24 engines. (Hint: it's hard to hear which ones caught and which one isn't.)

I'd guess this thing would be safe on the playa given the video.

is a "comfort bike" with no chain. This has distinct advantages on the playa. Upright riding position, grip shifting, and step-through frame (what we called a girl's bike in the Fifties, 'cause girls rode with those long dresses on and wouldn't swing their legs over the seats to mount).
