and just "happen" to stumble across BRC and noticed that there are some hills/mountains that are fairly close to the north west...like within a mile to a mile and a half.

How accessible are these and are they climber friendly?

You'd need a good BLM or Forest Service map to determine what's public and what's private land. My atlas map isn't too detailed, but there's a heavy band of white privately owned land running up the section along the playa. The peaks are almost always public BLM holdings, but the lower foothills are often private and the ranchers get a bit tectchy with trespassers.

The west edge of the playa starts getting spotty with private land. The hills to the east though are on BLM land no doubt. We had to search the area three or four years ago for a missing person.

The hills are pretty easy to climb, but the cliffs are not hard rock, more like dirt piles that crumble. Terrible climbing and drops tons of crap downhill for the next guy to deal with.

I have always liked the hills directly north, but that would be some driving to get too.

Later all.

Well poop.

I'll guess I'll admire them from afar then because that just smacks of effort. :D

Not quite sure what I'm thinking anyway...my out of shape, livin close to sea level almost 40 year old ass clamoring around on some rocks in the high desert. In the middle of nowhere.

Sounds like a great start for a "Hey ya'll, watch this..." kind of story.

Eh, just stop off in Southern Utah on the way back. Better scenery and trails; I don't climb, but the hills around the playa look dull as dirt even to my western eyes.

That's a common requirement with mountain climbing. :)

Well, that effort compounded with the effort of making sure its okay to actually climb there is the smacking part.

I think staying in camp and sipping icy cold mojitos contemplating the distant hills while my minions peel grapes for me under the noon day sun is a much better application of energies.

Of course...I need some minions...

Dammit.

I think I hear the smacking sound of effort coming back around.

<sigh>
