Porn for the Troops
I heard some propaganda on the radio today with our Nevada Congressman/come/Governor Jim Gibbons spouting how we should all send e-mails of "support" to him which his office will forward to the troops. Yeah, just what they want for Christmas.
My being
A: Male
B: Somebody who watched the movie Jarhead
I searched the internet to see if I could find a place where I could paypal a few bucks to get our boys some real Christmas cheer, no kiddie stuff, and there is even some R rated artistic cheesecake that would make soldiers and their little soldiers happy if just for 20 minutes. It seems it's outlawed if of a "sexual nature" and you can't send them care packages because of "national security".
Anybody know more about how all this works? Please direct any Bush Bashing and War Is Bad to the other political threads here on this board. I'm just trying to help these guys through it all in my own sick and burny way.

I understand that webnonsense or some other censorship software is in place.
It may be adjusted different in some places.
There has been some press over the finding that democratic sites are blocked , but christian Taliban sites always work.
I know of a case where a christmas video was blocked or partially blocked from being sent from Afghanistan.
The thing to do is ask the troops in a particular camp.
Each area is supposed to be able to adjust the protocols.
I would think videos are being sent in to almost any area in tape or dvd.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

Considering that what most muslim countries consider porn (pretty much the showing of any skin above the ankle and wrist or below the neck) and considering their legal system having a tendancy to chop off body parts of people who break the laws, I wouldn't risk sending them any.
Even what we might consider a tame holiday beach or pool snapshot is porn to many countries and the posession of it can be severely punished.
Sad but true.

Reach out to military families in your community, especially those with a loved one overseas.
Please do not flood the military mail system with letters, cards, and gifts. Due to security concerns and transportation constraints, the Department cannot accept items to be mailed to " Any Servicemember ." Some people have tried to avoid this prohibition by sending large numbers of packages to an individual servicemember's address, which however well intentioned, clogs the mail and causes unnecessary delays.
The support and generosity of the American people has touched the lives of many servicemembers, over 300,000 of whom are deployed overseas.
PEACE

Given the current situation in Iraq the above seems pretty moot.Seriously,...

FYI, one of the ways alcohol is getting slipped into Iraq is finding light colored brown liquors and diluting to the point of looking like Listerine and packing it as such.
Desert dogs drink deep.

Given the current situation in Iraq someone wanting alcohol or even opium badly enough could probably score from a local, and bypass the scrutiny of inspection, detection and prosecution with severe penalties for themselves and their friends stateside...
...I`m just sayin` it`s not a good idea to play fast and loose with the Muslim sensitivities in the arab countries that we operate out of...
...if I had my druthers, our experienced combat troops would have whatever the fuck they wanted,...and depending on who their CO`s are, they are probably getting what they need...porn and all.

Islam bans the drinking of alcohol, but Iraq has had a long tradition of secularism, and catered to the western "vices" for a dollar.
Now, in Iraq with a Shia majority government in place, I think they are cracking down more and don`t even sell it at the airport any longer.
The Cradle of Civilization is officially dry.
It is highly recommended that you don`t go there on vacation.
You can`t even get a decent glass of water there anymore.
But I have faith in Americans and America, and I believe that the laws of supply and demand will kick in, and soon the Chinese will come to the rescue, and drinking Raisin-Jack from a dirty boot in Iraq will be just a fond memory.
God Bless America

So I am posting this JUST because it is my Dad’s FAVORITE Vietnam Army story. There is no intent to help circumnavigate any laws.
A guy in my Dad’s unit gets a package from an uncle. Contents, 12 bottles of olives. The guy is disgusted because he does not like olives and thinks his uncle crazy for sending them. But his radio operator said “Lieutenant, I love olives, can I have a bottle?â€

Also, remember that if you ship eggs to our troops, pack them carefully. NOthing like having your eggs already shelly and scrambled before you even open the package!
