No such thing as overkill at Burningman...
May I assume generators are right out next year?

I'm planning on bringing out a diesel generator (not sure yet whether I'll be buying or renting), then using bio-diesel fuel. In an ideal setting, I'll also be able to work out the carbon footprint for the camp/village and I'll look into offsetting that, though before jumping on the offset bandwagon I want to look into the details a bit more. If this BBC article is to be believed, if it's not done properly it won't actually help anything.
I'd love to do be able to go with solar, but the price per kilowatt is just too rich for my blood at this time.

I seck all this gennie talk is for the sinngle/small camp/camper type.. I go to Bm to have fun. Don't need any camp lites. Eather out to party or to bed. I do need a small amount to lite the nite ride. So solor is not that far out of reach for my small needs. So if I conserve it helps you with your foot print..
Now that goddamit capt. needs two generators.. One to power his pace maker and the other for his swizzle stick.. And god only knows how big the boat engine is.. It has to be a bunch to carry that much ugly around.

You can get solar lights that have their own charger, you don't need a gennie for lights. Cheaper, just as green, smaller footprint and dunnage in the load.

IF There was a cheaper way
If I could produce 25KW, 24 hours a day for ten days on the playa, reliably for less than the $1500.00 it costs me every year to rent a diesel generator I would do it.
So people say OK you can start by at least using Bio.
Problem is the rental contract for every company I have found that rents Diesel generators generally prohibits the use of any fuel other than #2 diesel fuel. If the engine has a fuel related failure and you have anything in the tank other than than #2 diesel you have to pay for the cost of the repairs out of your own pocket. If they find bio or Veg in the fuel system when you turn it in you have to pay to have the system flushed and they will never rent to you again. The risk of either, to me is not worth it.

Copper Sulfate? Sodium Cyanide? Tincture of clorophyll of Hemlock and Castor Bean Leaf?
Tho either would probably kill the drinker, they would piss green, if they could pee before their demise...

Mega doses of lime KOOL-AID will do it. My sister and I drank about 4 gallons of it when we were in grade school.

Oxymoron, parody, controversial excellence in this year's theme. It' got things buzzing for sure. We have been seeking volunteers to push/pull the Dub Rocket around BRC for the entire week to no avail. We recieved the same response to the Giant "Mouse Wheel" we designed to power our camp, stage, amps, chargers etc.; no one wants to run in it all day to charge the 2 tons of batterys it would take to keep things going.
How about a giant, instant-methane converter that could work off all the crappers to power the event?

You can get special metal halide lamps to produce a powerful green color.
I think this is what was used at the waffle.
Any metal halide fixture works.
Works best bounced off something.
I recommend a 400 watt or 1000 watt bulb.

Playawaste Raiders cordially invites you to suck it.
Metal Halide in color
The loss is too severe.
Check the percentage of transmission on most colors.
And I have been unable to find true high temperature gels.
A deep color can block 80% to 90% of the light.
The metal halide selection is limited especially when it comes to red and purple, but 60% to 70% saturation in green and some blues.
If you have seen the buildings lit up in Las Vegas and other places that is generally how it is done.
Neon can produce a wider range of pure color and there are specialty bulbs,
but then you are talking about some money.
You can use any metal halide fixture and change the bulb to get color and switch it back to white the rest of the time.
Green with red light strings would make an interesting contrast.
I am sure this is what was used at the waffle.

Venture is the dominant us manufacturer of these.
Email me (not pm) if you need help choosing some.
They have a shorter life than standard metal halide, around 5000 hours and cost more, $75 to $150 last time I checked.
You can get a good older mercury fixture and refit a new ballast and you're set.
Or a new one , of course.

Poop Power Project
I plan on collecting all the solid waste from the port-a-potties, and feeding it into my home built methane digester. The gas produced will run a turbine electric generator. I am taking some "ripe" poop to seed the digester, the microbes should propagate and by the third day of BM I estimate that I will be generating 2500 KW of power during P.P.T ( peak pooping times ). I will feed the power into the BORG's grid, This should be more than enough juice so they will be able to take the fossil fuel generators off-line and run the medical tent, DPW and other power needs as well as the air conditioner in Larry's trailer . I am negotiating with Union Pacific to see if they will allow me to use one of their rails as a transmission line so I can feed excess watts back to the Sierra Pacific Power Company in Reno. I am looking for volunteers to help me produce/collect poop ... any takers ?

Re: Poop Power Project
And here I was wondering what I could gift this year. If you want, you could post your camp address in the directory and I can just drop by whenever I am able to help you out! Will I have to bring my own reading material, or will you have a properly stocked loo-brary?nocturnal_steve wrote:I am looking for volunteers to help me produce/collect poop ... any takers ?
Come to think of it, maybe you could find a bunch of people to do a dog-walking scene with you!
