Any Bay area burners wanna start a new/small camp???

Post by Playaface » Wed Jan 03, 2007 7:21 pm

I have an idea for a hip hop ice cream social that would give ice cream to our hot and wary fellow burners and play hip hop in a lounge setting. Anyone interested?? Its a little more detailed, I just would like to give you an example.

Are you making the ice cream on the playa? Had some from the Funk camp (2:30 & G). Incredible. Ready to crank here, ma'am, sir.

well since I have never made homemade ice cream (and I love the idea) . I was thinking 5 GL drums of some kind. But if there is a person that has the know how to make homemade then im open. I am open to ideas and want to make it work. Willing to brainstorm with like minded folks that have the same love of giving the people what they want, And thats Ice cream on the playa! I am looking for a DJ or two (must be Hip Hop or down tempo) and some extremly/freakishly friendly people to serve the ice cream. Kinda like a Basken robins or something. Costumes is also an option too.

Homemade ice cream is easy. There are lots of recipes out there. Basically you mix milk, sugar and flavoring together. Then you put it in a "special" mixer that chills and stirs the mixture. Generally ice is put around the outside of the mixer and salt is added to the ice which basically makes the ice colder. If you want to bring a generator and a large ice cream maker that would work.

To make Ice Cream on the playa you will need, ice, rock salt, the mix http://www.ice-cream-recipes.com/ and ice cream maker(s). The ice cream maker is a mechanical unit either hand crank or electric powered that simultaneously mixes and cools the ice cream mix. In short here is the process.
1 Make mix-usually involves cooking milk sugar and other things to make mix. Allow it to cool.
2 Disassemble Ice crean maker.
3 Put mix in canister, install beater in canister and put lid on canister.
4 Put canister in ice bucket and install the canister and beater rotator. check for proper functioning by plugging in or cranking a few cranks.
5 Time to add ice. Start by filling ice bucket 1/3 full of ice in a level manner and then add 1/2 cup rock salt on top of that. Repeat process twice to fill with ice and salt. Do not add ice to the point where it goes over the lid of the cannister but do keep the ice level near the top of the canister by adding small ammounts of ice and salt as needed. Do not add water to the ice at any point as it will add heat and really slow down the freezing process.
6 Start mixing by plugging in the mixer or by hand cranking. Do not stop the mixing process untill a resonably strong person has a really hard time cranking the crank or the motor stops.
7 Time to romove the beater. Remove the beater from within the canister while making sure that the canister does not float in the ice water. Once beater is out hand it off to friends to get a lick and then reinstall the lid and mixer top to hold the canister in the ice water. Top off the ice again at this point and then insulate the whole appartaus as best you can.
8 Give the ice cream some time to continue freezing and then serve it . I can't put a time value in here because the desire to have whatever wounderfull flavor you have chose to create will over rule the desire to have a slightly colder product. In fact it would not be surprising if you just ate it all at the beginning of step 7.

Now go buy two electric and one hand crank mixers from a garage or estate sale and practice at a friends pre burn summer birthday. Hit the playa and spread the word. Stop in at Black Rock City Welding and Repair and invite me over to help crank up a batch.

Besides my input a bit of research is probably warrented.

Wishing you the very best and see you there,

David

We took an ice cream maker out last year, my mate tried to make ice cream without the salt - Which melts the ice but it is still colder than freezing - didnt work, we ended up with real cool frosting, kinda like a soft serve.

We saw another camp that was using dry ice and water - worked beautifully. The dry ice keeps longer than ice and is way colder.

That same camp also had a bottle of Co2 they used. That worked well.

like was said above practice before you go out.

later all

I made lots of Ice Cream in 20odt6

Post by dougatious » Mon Jan 08, 2007 7:44 am

Howdy-

I made lots of ice cream last year. I got this red ball thing at REI (an outdoor store) that has one opening for ice and salt and the other for the cream. I freestyled the recipes- soy milk sugar and dried fruit or hot cocoa mix. It was damn good. It took about 20 minutes of shaking in the day and 10-15 at night, make about a quart.

That sounds awesome. I'll be trying that recipe later on today. Can't wait!

So I guess the best place to start is looking for easy going, like minded folks that want to become part of this camp. Im only looking for a few people, and we only partake 2 hrs a day. Im on the mission for looking for ice cream makers and Im coming up with some recipes already.

Also looking for a Hip hop/funk/down tempo/chill breaks DJs to spin. Dont have to be part of the camp if you dont want to, just share your sweet beats!
