Burning Christmas Trees
Seeing my tree starting to turn brown, and burning it almost every year I was wondering if anyone ever planned a get-together where everyone brings their dried up X-mas tree to burn at the end of the night. Those things go up pretty nicely.
My dad used to go to an annual Christmas tree burn. This year, unfortunately, the organizer wants everyone to bring a particular type of tree (some trendy one whose name I don't remember-- it has a high oil content and is expensive), and it isn't the type of tree my dad got.
If peopel save up their tree until August, that should be quite a fire!

If you save them that long, all the needles fall off. Mid-to-late january is about right for maximum effect. I've also seen experiments done with colored fire by adding things like ethyl borate to the tree. Results were mixed.

Re: Burning Christmas Trees
There has been an annual xmas tree burn @ Ocean Beach for decades. The one time I went (96?) Danger Ranger himself lit the pyre.MikeVDS wrote:Seeing my tree starting to turn brown, and burning it almost every year I was wondering if anyone ever planned a get-together where everyone brings their dried up X-mas tree to burn at the end of the night. The best part was that some of it floated away as the tide came in. Or was it that the tide came up around the firepit?
The worst part was all the plastic burnt.

Growing up on a tree farm (mostly White pine, with some Scotch and Austrian) I got used to regular bonfires when we had to cull trees from the rows or prune low branches. (A big pine burn is great for doing quick, sloppy aluminum casting although you have to work quickly to use the peak heat to melt your scrap.) The flaming woodpiles, often twenty feet thick, would instantly heat the zipper and rivets on your jeans. Yieee! Then hawks would come and circle on the thermals. We'd sometimes use the plywood shields from our "simulated Medieval conflicts" to allow us to get close enough to the fire to cook hot dogs. Now the pines are all so huge that Dad, living in the middle of a thousand noble trees, has an artificial one.

Danger Ranger's 17th Annual "Friends of the Rootless Forest" Christmas Tree Burn was last night. (I only just saw this thread today, or I'd've posted sooner....) I was unable to make it up from the South Bay; I'm hoping someone has pictures.BigCock wrote:There was one on Ocean Beach last year. I assume there will be one this year too. It's a great casting off.
