Hey there, I am a "virgin" burner and am looking forward to the event this year.
Does anyone know the lineup for bands this year? My friends are so excited about taking me this year. I cannot wait. Forgive my ignorance here -
I have some questions I have to ask - my friends are making it so mysterious to me and just say - You'll see!!, You'll see. I dont want to see I want to know before I go.
is it true that a lot of girls get roofied there and raped - or is that an urban myth?
is it as deadly as eveyone says?
Is this a pagan ritual like the folks at my church say and I see on lots of articles?
I just want to dance, experience people, and see all of the interactive art.
and is there a goth camp I can hang with?
Hugs and kisses to you all

Melissasheart,
It’s not that people are trying to make it seem mysterious, it is that the experience is truly indescribable. The harshness of the environment, the heat and the cold, people from all over, the vibe and the way people relate to one another , many seem to not be all that different from the world your used to but every thing is different. There is a magic to every thing , and yet it is mundane, even if you have a miserable time it will still be the time of your life. The art is amazing, and the freedom to make forms of expression is amazing, not that all the art is really that fabulous but it is there, people have made it them selves or with the help of people like you. From professional artists , accountants, waitresses, real-estate salesman , kids old people every one, art comes to be and is place on the blank canvas of the playa. Sculpture, music, dance, painting , theatrical performance, costuming , craziness, and play, some by professionals most by regular people some of them discovering there own creativity for the first time. It’s surreal and hyperreal, its a dream and yet the home you’ve always known your soul emanated from. It’s dirty, nasty, draining, and beautiful .
There may be a few name bands you might know or DJs but for the most part no one is any different than anyone else , it’s not about stars it’s about people.
There has been a few incidents of people being drugged with out there knowledge, and rape but considering how many people are there you are probably much safer than you are at home.
People do get hurt and a few have died, it can be a dangerous place but again considering how many people are there and how many have over indulged in some thing, it’s not unreasonably dangerous. I would hazard to guess by leaps and bounds the most things people get treated for are related to dehydration.
Pagan,... there are some pagans there, and Baptist ministers, and Buddhists, and nudists, and libertarians, and kindergarten teachers, and scientists. There is a spiritual feeling a lot of people including my self get particularly at the temple burn on Sunday night. But no It’s not really pagan.
Enjoy
Learn every thing you can from the main burning man site particularly the survival guide, look at all the pictures , read this board and get to know some people. And as often as it is said and as hard as it is when you go threw that gate give up on any and every expectation you have and just let things come to you as they will join in when the opportunity arises, let it be what it is. Don’t expect to find a soul mate or make a great breakthrough in your personal growth, any of it just let it be what it is,.... it really is more than enough.

Looking for Fire Jugglers
Hi Firehorse here,
it’s been a few years since I have been to burningman, 20 years ago I traveled Europe juggling fire and performing. It took till 2003 to get to Burningman and I got to 2004 also but have missed the past 2 years. I am not a Poi performer I am one of the small group of women fire juggles (fire clubs)
I would love to find other fire juggles (who can passing fire clubs in the dark and know a nice collection of tricks) my dream is to find another women to Juggle with in 2007. Its been a long time since I have Fire performed with other women but I live in hope,
Note: if no females are around I am willing to fire juggle with men folk if they are skilled Fire Performers.
I am a little rusty but am signed up to get in shape for 2007!
As a long time fire performer I feel that Burningman is the place that I will find more flaming souls like myself, I am a transplant from England and have been here a long time!
Q: is there a theme camp for fire performers?
Look forward to hearing form other FIRE JUGGLERS & folk

Thanks ZuleG
So I need some input for something thats been going through my head.
I started working at this new job september of last year. My first day on was when 20 or so of the workers here came back from Burning Man.
It has been months since then and the prevailing talk is still "Camp this.....Camp that......Crazy guy on stilts........belgium Waffle...."
This office is covered in pictures of these people working in the Sudan, Iraq, Antarctica, Australia, Egypt, Rome, Switzerland, and more. Yet the dominant talk is BM.
So what uis it about BM - its only a week!!!
Ths is my first rel job. i graduated in june from high school and am 19. My boss hired me before he left for Burning Man and simply told me what day to be there and what time. I beat them to the office and the duty officer told me to wait that they would be there any minute. 20 minutes later 2 massive semis pull up, and 20 or more people pile out. They looked like they had just got off the set of a mad max movie!!!.
I like it here and realize I can make a living out of working here. I make enough to pay my rent, my bills and have some to put in the bank.
I asked my boss "what is it about Burning Man that makes you all go?"
he said " to me its a time to heal, and let the craziness ooze out and be sucked up by the fire, and desert. I find it soothing and relaxing to be there."
I asked another supervisor "what is t about Burning Man that makes you go?"
He Said "I like the booze, trance, fire, craziness, and non stop action"
How can it be both? What I worry about is this. These people are work fanatics. They work 40-60 hours a week at home and put 100+ hours a week in when deployed. I punch their time in and know. Do I want a career that will make me need BM this much.
i am learning from friends that it also is not normal for an employer to pay for you to go to Burning man. This company paid all of the expenses for the 20+ people that went as a team building excercise.
Seems crazy to me. So far my assignments have included:
1. going to a seahawks game so the seats dont get wasted
2. measure all of the trucks in the company
3. scan all of the files into .pdf
4. and whatever else comes to my supervisors mind.
I am starting to ramble so I am going to bed now.
peace

MellisaHeart... re-read Zule's post. It just about sez it all. Don't try to anticipate what it will be about, because you will not experience it that way. Just read the survival guide to be prepared for the harshness of the environment.
No one can give you the same answer, because the experience is always personal...one that we are all experiencing during that week.

Everything Zu says is the fact, Miss Melissa. Some of it may be hard to believe, like when he tells you about his eleven inch penis, but Gawd a-mighty there it was. One time he passed out in the dirt and we used it as a sun dial. Keep mum about it, though. He blushes easily . . .
It ain't the hanging, it's the drop.
