What are you working on?

Post by Ranger Genius » Mon Jan 08, 2007 10:44 pm

Share with all of us that little project that you're putting together in your spare time. Article of clothing, painting, sculpture, custom bike, art car, whatever. In whatever stage of construction. Bounce it off the board for feedback or just share your idea with us so that you have some accountability and therefore might actually finish it.

And on that note, I've begun my early conceptualization stages for a woodblock print for 2007. Last year I was inspired by ManTis to create my "Welcome Insect Overlords" piece, and am working on a thematic piece for this year. I really enjoyed working with the relief printing media so I found some really great imagery of the Green Man and modified them to suit my purpose. This is a composite of the patterns for the two different blocks I plan to cut. These are only drafts, so the final design could change radically. I'm not sure I'm sold on the two-tone design at all yet, in fact. I may just do the darker areas and have only one impression for each block. I also think I need to find some way to fill in the solid areas around the corner. Maybe just some more oak leaf pattern, or I was thinking perhaps some wood grain, or tree bark texture. What do you guys think?

I have a nice stack of blank canvasii. And a skeletal dog for a maybe project, and some orange clothes to be tarted up. Other than that, I've got a tribe going for co-campers so we can bitch and kvetch and sort things out now prior to the playa. Oh yeah, redecorate the rhoadescar. Get Bucky a new costume. Make sure all the light toys get packed.

Hmmm, I may make a few greenman pendants, but other than that, I could pack up and go tomorrow.

Oh dear, JOB syndrome.

Maybe once I get past the 50 hour birthday party I'll be more inspired. Oh yeah, couldn't decide on friday or saturday for the party, so went with both, and Genius pointed out that was nearly 50 hours for 50 years, if I threw in Sunday brunch I could have a 50 hour party. Y'all are invited if you hit northern utah the weekend of the 19th. (oh crap, I just invited the eplaya to my house, shit)

Working on a puppet. Currently doing motion studies, figuring out articulation and suspension, draughting joints and gathering materials.

It goes without saying that when I say "puppet," I'm talking more along the lines of Dark Crystal than Punch 'n Judy...

I've been filming the endangered California clapper rail in my neighborhood. The rangers have asked me to start giving guided walks of the habitat area and the local paper did a story on me. I love these birds and it's given me a new satisfying purpose to groove on.

the leafy look is one of my favorite versions of the green man. i think you did a great job on it and wish you the best.

currently all my projects are on hold due to an injury. my dome project is finished but i have to sell it to my dad for his storage needs and my financial needs, also due to my injury and reduced income. i have a silver gift project in the works but it has changed a few times for the better thanks to input from eplayans. i plan on making some rings and pendants.. everyone hand tooled and unique.. possibly with a copper accents to reflect the year and maybe a copper man.

Lookin' good, RG! I treasure the print you gave me last year- It takes up prime real estate in the studio!

Got an articulated Green Man head in the works, with rolling eyes and dry ice-breathing capacity, built around a demented Santa head rescued from the curb...And the PBR Mod construction continues- It's a Soyuz-inspired space vehicle/structure, destined to dock at the LabWerks station in Terminal Village.

Okay, I'll stop being evasive...here's a concept sketch of the puppet.

Image

I don't want to lessen her impact more than I have to so just imagine that eight feet tall and three feet wide, with mobile joints and facial expressions. In keeping with the theme (and to stay on budget) the best portion of it will be made of found and recycled materials. Pretty much the only things I've bought for it were the eyes and some of the joint and connective hardware.

Edit: Credit where it's due, I didn't draw that sketch. I Photoshopped it together from another person's sketches because it worked and I was lazy, I forget their name at the moment.

I'm building a giant roaming snake. Just bought the head on Saturday - an old Ford Econoline. It goes against my car-selection instincts, but sometimes you have to compromise when you're working with others. Plus, it was real cheap and will be great for hauling stuff down.

Today I'm clearing off my workbench, sorting tools and meezing up materials. Tomorrow I'm starting work on the puppet's skeleton.

Yesterday I recieved a 1970 3/4 ton camper special pickup frame with axles, brakes, driveline, and good tires. The 4 matching hub caps are beauties and will polish up well. I will be powering it with a motorcycle engine and a generator or two. Besides the necessary lights it will have a forward looking infared camera and monitor system to avoid hitting darkwads. When it all comes together it will be the Space Yacht.

Good luck on your projects!!!

It'd sure be cool if that wolf-puppet could go from a fourlegged crouch to upright "loup garou" stance as you sketched....Just being confronted by a big 'ol wolfie on the playa should be quite...exciting! Dare I dream of Thunderdome- Wolf VS. ManTis?
