No Money!!???
So, I said this will be my first time going to the Festival..I'm very excited..but I was wondering..I know that there is not selling or buying allowed...so as for let's say some of the bars and what not..How do you get things..at these themed clubs and what not..do you just bring things to trade them for drinks and what not? Thakyou..
Well, it is a gift economy. If you like someone, give them something. If they like you, they give you something. It more or less works like that. (It helps if you are feeling more social than shy, surley, or something along those lines.

Pretty much everything is free. People set up bars to gift drinks and if you like them it's a nice gesture to gift them a bottle of something. This works out well for bars because they are usually low by the end of the week and people realize that they have too large of a personal stash and are willing to give back to the bars they've been drinking at all week.
People share their creativity in many ways and you contribute back by sharing your creativity. It's not always balanced but many people get more joy by people appreciating their work than by appreciating someone else's. Most people who enjoy the festival realize that they want to contribute and take on projects for the next year. First timers aren't expected to do anything because it's quite hard to realize what you want to do until you know what burningman is, and you can't know because no one can tell you what experience you'll have.

A gift economy seems like a pretty strange thing but it does work, on a number of levels. In a usual transaction in the default world you pay money and get a drink the transaction is over, you feel your entitled to a degree of quality and service and expect to get what you paid for. in the gift economy, someone gives you a drink, it might not be exactly what you wanted, or it might be, quality may very but they gave it to you so what do you have to bitch about. in turn your left being indebted ,you owe a bill to someone but not necessarily the person who gave you the drink so you gift something to someone else maybe it’s something you made, or a song or helping perform some task. This forces you to interact with people on a more equal bases , and it feels good to give people things and have people give you things ,... maybe that’s why Christmas is so popular,.. anyway it works to build community. If your really particular about your drinks then bring your own and share your idea of quality by sharing drinks with others.
Part of what helps make it all work is the communities emphasis on radical self reliance , you should already have all that you need with you, so all gifting is icing on the cake.

Pay it forward - treat others as you wish to be treated. Zulegoona, and MikeVDS, hit it on the head. If your a prick and have the "give me, Give me, Give Me" attitude you are goint ot be in for a crappy week. Be sociable, and talk be friendly and you'll have a blast People at BM surprise me every year.

you guys all said it so well!
I do like the term "pay it forward" I loved the movie, finally somebody came out with something significant in hollywierd!!!
But yes, Its so hard to know what to expect or more rather what to not expect...I found that everytime I asked the question
"what should I expect?" before I went for my first time...I was always told the same thing "LEAVE ALL YOUR EXPECTATIONS AT YOUR HOUSE"
!your going home, and you'll never be able to REALLY put that feeling into words...so many have attempted and a few have come so damn close, but truely its such a higher feeling it would be like asking a dog to explaine what he hears with a high frequency whistle(not the hurt the sound)...Ive yet to really seen it be done.

Pinemom - is right, not about the movie - I hate that little wiener!!
But about BM she is spot on!!!. I cannot describe BM to any of my non resident friends, the closest I can come is video, and that still does not do it justice.
pace yourself and try to see all you can at BM. One thing we do is try to ride every street and avenue every year on our bikes 3-4 times. I can guarantee you that even though you covered the same ground it will be different every time!!!
Paceing yourelf also mean the hours. BM doesnt shut down at 0200 like a lot of towns. 0200 is still hours from the peak of the night.
Some must sees from the list of Eric
1. Do every street as often as you can
2. See the sunrise
3. Meet everyone
4. Stop at the med camps at the 3 and 9 esplenades, and the rangers at camp Berlin / Tokyo and say hi.
5. See the man before it burns
6. go to the outer playa and look around
7. hang out at center camp.
8. see everything.
I can go on and on. but you get the point. Drink Water, and have a blast.

Oh yeah...DRINK WATER
I drank water all day everyday! along with alcohol..hehee
But On Sunday I went DOWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
apparently I got so enthralled with the festivities on Sat. woops I forgot WATER
Bad thing!!! VERY BAD THING! I was fortunate enough to have some ass kicking co-campers that rehydrated me, harshly I might add. But it kept me from having to go to med camp and having to be held hostage!
No dont get me wrong if you feel dehydrated, weak, like your gonna throw up, pas out etc... get to med tent quik! beats being escorted out by ambulance!

The rule is one of those 500 ml water bottles per beer or beverage. Set up a buttpack to hold 2 of those nalgene liter bottles, take with you everywhere - even if you'll be right back!!pinemom wrote:Oh yeah...DRINK WATER

One of my favorite burners (and one of your camp mayors, Pinemom!!) did that one year, ended up doing the Reno Shuttle ANd I know she knew better!! You can play around with a lot out there, but dehydration shouldn't be one of them! That's why we do the igloo with Emergen-C behind the Kantina bar. Cheap insurance!
Hugs...

The Playa is harsh. People can die to death out there pretty seriously.
