New Microsoft Ad....

Post by Rabbi Dali Rick » Sat Jan 13, 2007 9:07 am

Has anyone seen this new Microsoft Ad that is depicts a son and father sitting on a couch. The 15-ish son is ultra conservative Skater, and the father is the 39-ish totally pierced, tattooed up, hippster who enthusitcally talks about his new tattoo that he wants to get, hopefully before they're off to Burningman, the kid responds with "I hate my life."

Noo... haven't seen it, but it sounds awful. Just like Microsloth. Hmm, sounds like something for the lawsuit...

Demotivation

I haven't seen that, though it sounds familiar.

This is funny, but it's a commercial site.
So come and get me.

Where do you think I steal my taglines from?

I think it's cool that the dad is the one that's hip, or that Burning Man is older-people shit or whatever. Works for me.

The dad, who has his lip pierced, wants a prison tattoo on his back by somebody who can accoomodate his low pain threshold...and he needs it in time for Burning Man.

Maybe Microsoft just made Burning Man uncool. Far fucking out! I prefer that Bruce Dern-Adam Ant-Go Visit the Baghwan World Gone Wild scary vibe anyway. Let us prey!

Shit On the Screen- Logo Supers

Post by gyre » Mon Jan 22, 2007 1:03 am

I finally saw it.
I am so finely tuned to filter out ads,
all I heard was burning man.
I thought I saw something similar in an outdoors scene.
Maybe a different ad.

I am a marketing nightmare.
When they started running 40% advertising, I started using tape to skip ads.
Now I don't even hear them when they play.
When they put shit in the corner of the screen, logos and such, I tape cardboard over them.
Do those serve any purpose besides making hbo look good and angering the customer?
They ruin a film for me and I change the channel.
Then I call the station and tell them.
"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

The people at the stations hate them too. It's a senior management obsession, those little corner bugs.

Remember when TV set and cable tuners actually told you what station you were on with a little display separate from the screen?!

Why is 40% advertising even legal? $@*#ing FCC!

Post by gyre » Mon Jan 22, 2007 7:27 am

There is no excuse for them.
The only time they would be useful is during commercials and they always remove them then.
They probably won't pay for ads with that garbage up, but we are supposed to watch them?
If enough people complain, they will take them out.
They had to lighten them here.
If you want to have an impact, call advertisers and tell them how much you dislike it.
They go a bit nuts when I tell them I physically cover that section of the screen.
I hope to eventually block them digitally.
Even PBS uses them sometimes.
They got a lot of complaints.

Of course theres always the argument that its their station and programing. Commercials bug me to no end - but on the other hand I chose to watch their product. Its the advertising that pays for any programming - everyone knows that.

later all.

Bait and Switch- Partial Shows

Post by gyre » Mon Jan 22, 2007 8:19 am

Actually, the air space belongs to the public and they are supposed to be granted access to use it as long as they serve a useful purpose.
This concept is alien to the current administration.
It has been ignored completely as news quality and budgets fail.
I have no problem with advertising per se, but 40% is absurd and counterproductive anyway.
It creates people like me that skip ads outright.
I can't tell you how often I'm asked if I've seen a certain ad, and I have no clue.

The worst part of this is bait and switch programming.
Most older shows are badly butchered when shown to fit the new shorter hour.
Even MASH is missing a lot.
The older the show, the worse it gets.
Don't ever watch the Addams Family on tbs.
Every single joke is cut out.

Some stations don't do this or do less.
If Turner still owns it, shows seem to run full length.
If you see an hour program or half hour run in a longer slot, that is why.
We should support stations that don't run fake versions of shows and films.

Talk radio makes me want to throw myself under a bus.
I've been on radio.
But a talk show?
Gives me the whim-whams.

I admit a fondness for a couple of Air America shows, but that's only in my car when changing the station is within an easy reach.

I can only listen to "Are you losing your hair," and "Send for my free CD to learn how to make a million dollars in-- " (I'll never know in what, since I always turn that ad off.)

Ads My Ass.......

Post by Rabbi Dali Rick » Mon Jan 22, 2007 11:34 pm

I feel you. My roommates are addicted to talk radio. even radio has decended into a muck and mire of bullshit wanna-be's who constantly rape my ear in there attempt to attain the Ultimate holygraile of Stern-like viewership. This new crop of station DJs could care less that out of 15 minutes of air time, they talk 5 minutes before they play a song, talk over the begining of song, and the end of the song, before they cut that sort, and then go right into 6 minutes of uninteruppted commercials. My roommates at least have the Sirius radio, where most of the commercials are cut out, but all they listen too is talk radio. My opinion is that talk radio is for the lonely, people who need to listen to other people talk because they lead such isolated lives, they never hear other peoples voices. They listen to these people ramble on, and on, and on, about absolutely nothing. My God how can anybody be interested in someone just droning on like that, hour after hour. Personally, By the end of my day I'm usually so sick of hearing people talk I just want some silence, no radio, no tv, just quiet. My limit is about 1/2 hour on like the Stern show or Tom Licus, before I just wonder what the hell makes these peoople talk so damn much... and it seems that every station is hiring these guys hoping to lure more listeners with talk instead of music. I usually find my self screaming at the radio for them to just shut the fuck up, and play the music. Like you say tv has just gotten worse more commercials time while chopping off the content.... And lets not get started on the TV News, what the fuck is that all about? In a 30 minute newscast you now are lucky if you get 5 stories out of these guys. Everybody wants to be a celebrity and that personal banter taking up 40% of the newscast time, it's just rediculus. Now, I just go on the internet for my news, and leave the pompus, self-center, self-absorbed newscaster to wank it away amongst each other.

There's a radio station in Portland whose slogan is "The only station that really rocks"; and yet, for quite a while they played 6 fucking hours of Howard Stern... With no music.

Best ad I've seen since Charlotte Church did that 60 second ad.

Rabbi Dali Rick,

I am SO glad to know that I am not the only one to scream at the radio about playing the music. That would make me a weirdo.

But I also scream at the brain dead cell phone talkers when they do not push down on the gas pedal when the light turns GREEN.

I guess I am weird that way.
