What they did is not necessarily dangerous at all. A few simple calculations and tolerances on their slingshot materials could tell you that.

I'm pretty certain that the test launch was done with a human sized doll.

I was kind of hoping that they would get the launchee a bit higher. I wonder what kind of safety margin they have?

The engineer in me tells me that when they get complacent and stop doing safety checks, get reckless or one of those bands lets go, your going to drill your body into the upright that is still attached at Warp Speed!!!! theres a reason amusement rides, and bungee operators need to be licensed, and registered.

I see a lot going wrong with a home made set up.

I don't know these guys, and I wouldn't trust them with my safety without looking and knowing what they did. But I also would trust my homemade stuff more than licensed bungee/roller coaster/whatever guys too. Just because homemade stuff is usually crap doesn't mean it always is. And what they did wouldn't take much more than some basic physics.

The professional ones are very similar. They just usually pull the participants down and launch them upward. Similar dangers and the upward one seems a bit more thrilling IMO.

one of the problems with art at burningman is that most of it just isn't dangerous enough.

The coaster is cool....partly because it's dangerous....along with dance dance revolution (forgot what it's really called) \

I happen to think dangerous art is more fun than the boring kind.....
