So, I must say thanks to these forums...

Between lots of reading here and other places from experienced Burners, I have significantly modified my plans for my first trek out.

My original plans had involved a school bus sized vehicle, solar arrays and wind turbines, building a yurt or dome (or both), above and beyond meal planning, etc etc... Really shooting for the moon kind of stuff with a grand camp.

The more I read, the more I started thinking WTF Mate? about my plans.

Now, I am planning on nothing more than a portable car port style structure that incorporates the bed of my truck as part of my living space with either a tent or secondary shade structure set up within or over the car port, some type of carpeting, some battery powered lights here and there and easy to prepare food such as canned goods and backpacker meals that only require a pan and a single burner propane stove and of course, the obligatory stockpile of water, Gatorade and other beverages.

My wife was joking that at this rate, I might be able to get it all in the Beetle if I add a roof rack to it. :D

Ahoy Cap!!

That sounds like a good approach for your first year. the back of my truck is my playa bedroom also and our camp has grwn from that starting point. Last year we made struts to couple the truck and my campmates' trailer to our dome and covered the whole thing with silver tarps. That way we had a central commmunity room and two connected private bedrooms. It worked great.

And rest assured that once you are leaving from the event and driving back to the default world, your brain will not lack for ideas of things for next year.

See you in the dust!

May I ask why you're not going with your original plan? It sounds great to me. You do need to know what you're getting into and can be rough, but if you have the time and resources to set-up and test your equipment before you come the first plan sounds better. If you plan on working out the bugs at burningman, then go with the revised plan until you have adequate testing.

I am switching gears because I think I'd rather focus my energies on the event itself, not how impressive I can make my camp. At this point, I'm still going to be a solo Burner. I have some friends that are "We're so there" but have yet to even look into buying ticket. So with that in mind, I figure it is a safer bet to plan on going light with an easy one man set-up that requires minimal maintenance to maximize my time there exploring rather than counting on what amounts to a doubtful maybe in having extra hands to set up something larger.

It would suck to invest time, money and energies into building a 20 foot yurt only to find myself having to rely on finding someone to help me set it up once I got on the Playa. I understand that kind of giving is a part of the community, but I do not want to be that guy having to take advantage of it because original plans didn't work out at the last minute.

I have done the massive camping before with the SCA. Shade pavilions on the tourney grounds, living pavilions, heavy camp furniture, wardrobes, etc. There's not to much modification necessary for Burning Man then say prepping for Gulf Wars or Pensic. So I am no stranger to the grand campsite and I remember that while its nice to have and very inviting for others, it can be a huge pain in the ass to maintain.

Plus, after a week (or more) you still gotta take it all down and repack it just so, and hope it all fits back in the truck.

Between the time since I posted the first message and now, I have set up an appointment with a welder friend to look at modifying a ladder rack for my truck into a cargo rack/observation deck. So...even though I am saying "small and light, small and light", my mind is still looking at "big and fun, big and fun" because a 20 foot windmill mast starting on top of a deck already 10 feet off the ground would be better than a 20 foot mast on the ground and what a great place to utilize as an anchor point for stuff... :D

You could always bring it and plan on not setting it up. As you meet new people if you find volunteers then it can go up, if not you always have it for next year. :)

Ahoy der Cap'n:

For your first year, just go with minimal infrastructure. If you are like me, your head will be spinning in non-stop amazement and you wil not spend much time at home anyway. My biggest suggestions to you are to:

1. get to know your neighbors and everyone else by pulling up a chair and having a chat with random folks. If you are bearing goodies or treats so much the better...ALWAYs have a cup on you but dont assume they are giving away anything other than interesting conversation

2. get a little buzzed and get on your well lighted bike at night and tour the Deep Playa Art at a leisurely pace.

3. go dancing at The Deep End just before sunset

4. get yer head washed at Astral Headwash

5. and dring three times the water you normally drink

You're gonna have a blast!!

There is still a chance I will put one together, do not give up hope yet.

I find the idea of a locking door on my tent to be attractive.

If you want to go back to the sca, don't come.

Burning man has the side effect of making everything else seem so fucking boring!

I'm not saying you can't.
But you may find you start to crave more variety.
The sca seems very slow paced after burning man.

Yeah, my advice to first-timers who don't normally do stuff like this or have veterans with them is to just go simple the first year. Once you're (a) sure that you like Burning Man and (b) know the ins and outs of camping/living out there, then expand your plans beyond the basics.
It's what you make it.

You know folks, if a spammer posts and NO ONE posts after them, I can see them in Last Post which is far, far quicker than hitting their profile to look for their posts. Just sayin'. You don't have to not post, but I'd be thankful. Cold beer on the playa thankful? Hmmm, don't know yet.

Cold beer does sound good... hmm. Is quarter after ten in the morning on a Saturday too early to start...? :? I wonder.... :?:

I thought beer thirty started at 6pm Friday and ran thru until you fell down.

Day before Thanksgiving until Valentine's Day. Then it starts up sometime around Memorial Day and runs through Halloween.

So somebody started up the 'pulled over while driving your art car' thread with its rants about drunk walkers in front of sober art cars. :->

I thought that the trick to drinking was to pace yourself-- that way the art car never quite catches up with you!
