Question about DMV and Roads at BM

Post by capjbadger » Mon Feb 05, 2007 2:07 pm

Question 1: Is there a max size to an Art Car?

Question 2: What is the minimum road width at BM?

Don't mind me...

There are different types of licenses you can get - if your car is over a certain size they may limit you to only driving on the outer playa, like Draka. I have not seen any mention of a set number for this size, but "slightly bigger than a schoolbus" is about the biggest I've seen on the roads. Whether your car is too big is likely a judgement call based on things like width, length, maneuverability, visibility, etc. There is also no set road width - they're marked pretty wide, but people move the markers around and leave things parked on the side. There are T-junctions and roundabouts to deal with as well.

I've been emailing [email protected] about my long art car idea and they've been responsive. You might drop them a line if you're planning something bigger than your basic party bus.

Not sure about the road width but if you're talking anything much bigger tna a school bus then I think Dork's right. You'll probably be licensed to drive in the open playa only. A general - very general rule of thumb is that if you're moving through the camps your vehicle should allow for traffic coming in the opposite direction. This consideration is more about allowing emergency vehicles to get to a situation more than anything else.

I saw one art car with outriggers trying to navigate a city street, took up the entire road and people were jumping off to move things (bikes, whatnot) so it could move forward. Didn't seem like a good idea at all.

Don't mind me...

1) Bigger is BETTER! Preferably larger than a house.. possibly even the size of a ship! Extra points for steam power!

2) Fuck roads.. keep that thing on the deep playa!

Good luck with your build!

Awesome. Thanks for all the input folks. This is a project on the 2-3year plan.
The damn thing would be somewhere around 35ft wide x 30 long x 18 high. It's a crazy nutty idea that needs alot more thinking and math to see if it's even workable.

Someone should shoot me before I start working on this...

Specific requirements will depend on what is seen as needed to be safe.
Remember that lighting requirements are very different from the road.

They'll have to come after me first... I just started work on one that's 8ft wide x 8ft high x 200ft long. I just now realized it will have more floor space than my house. Not sure I'll hit 200ft the first year but I'm giving it a shot.

Keep working your idea! It would definitely be playa-only, but there's no shame in that. I've been driving a standard art car the last couple of years and the only time I hit the roads is to go back to camp or drop other people off in their camps.

Art cars should strive to be playa only IMO. Driving around the city causes more problems than it's worth.

This is true. There are some exceptions, but they are generally smaller than normal automobiles. When driven too fast the small ones can be the most annoying though.

*blink blink* 200ft?!? Holy crap... lol

My main worry at this point is doing the math to make sure the winds won't be able to tip it over.

I've never been a big fan of excess math usage, though it's probably a good idea when you're talking about something 18 feet high. The fact that you're going so wide should keep it from getting airborne as long as it's heavy enough. Mine will be low and open enough that it (hopefully!) won't be a concern. I've certainly got enough obstacles already.

Yay math... I need to roughly figure out the weight of the damn thing, then figure out the max force the wind can put on it. I'll have to do some research on how to figure the wind catching surface area of a curved surface. If it was just the flat side of say a car it'd be alot easier.

The main body is really only about 12' tall with a "lump" at the top that kicks up the total to around 18'.
