it's all about what you value really. my clarity is the most important thing I have that is mine. it is what allows me to be able to connect with others, and be present for my daughter. i like feeling my feelings now, and i'm no longer scared of the quickness of my mind. so it's not about control now, it's about priorities. it was about control at first tho, to be sure.

In my book, sobriety takes way more balls than being high.
Whether we have pussies or balls, sober is a necessity for some of us!

After 10 burns and half the family in programs over the last ten years, it was cool to meet some folks from the sober community while involved in a dawn meditation. no way I'm even close to clean & sober, but Spirit speaks to many. ..and listening to the Spirit usually ends up with getting those scratchy exstential needs met a little better, but you wouldn;t know it if you haven't been there. We had a good "meeting" and it was instructive for the group to understand being sober wasn't in any way a block to all the riches the playa provides. I support these groups and often guide visitors to AA N/A camps when I can. the life-changingly powerful experiences one can find on the Playa are there for everyone no matter what you've filled your body with, or brought up with you to sort out.

The question isn't whether to alter your consciousness or not.
The questions are Why, How, Where, and When.

Abductor wrote:Scientific research has shown that AA is ineffective, that their recovery rate is the same as when alcoholics just go it on their own. And there are many many problems with AA, and it is not dissimilar from a religious cult. There are recovery groups out there that are secular and whom actually change and improve their techniques over time, treating the problem as a science rather than a religion. There are even medications that have shown to be effective. I would urge everyone to google it before just taking AA as "gospel".
a) Scientific reasearch has also showed that recovery programs for Addicts in general are inneffective. Addiction/Alcoholism is a very very serious malady that is hard to treat. So AA is one way that people choose to do it. Going it alone is another. if indeed addiciton reasearchers found aa to be a negative hting in regard to treating alcoholism then addiciton specailists would cease to reccomend it. but they do and often. And, in fact, some of these Psychatrists and Psycologists are even more knowledgeaeble than a google search.
b) The people who "go it alone" and who go to AA are TWO DIFFERENT GROUPS of people. Perhaps those who go it alone do so because AA wouldnt work for them and those who go to AA do so because going it alone hadnt worked for them.
C) It is insulting and rude to insinuate that people who hold beliefs differnt than yours are brainwashed cult members.
D)MANY WOULD SAY THAT BURNING MAN IS A CULT. But we know different. We know that those people "just dont get it" and are stuck in their own prejudices and tehir own form of dogma. Seems similar to this discussion.

Burning Man is NOT a cult! The rumors of Doom worshiping, oven mitt fetishes, burning effigies of a man, camps organized around bars and the death of popular dolls, public nudity, topless bicycle riding, temples being built and burned, and other suspicious activities are completely unfounded and without merit! So there! :P

Remember the official ceremony -

First, dressed in white homespun gauze, one is to stop by the land of cold, Kamp Arctica, and purhcase an offering to the desert Gods one bag of solid hydration.

Then the noviate shall circle center camp counterclockwise. (now you know why there's always a circular road around it!) and when you pass first camp, bow and prostrate yourself 3 times, saying the holy mantra...

"Ohwaahhhh Tahsss Uckahhah Ayeammm"

Throwing bits of ice over the tarp above the picnic tables.

Do this hourly for a full day. Is required of all virgin burners, you know.

Then you may become a lamplighter, if you have proven yourself worthy!

heh heh heh...

Don't forget, if 40000 tickets are sold, no newcomers will be let in this year.
Have to control the crowd some way.
