I've abandoned watches long ago. There is playa time and you'll sadly never get away from it. Much more accurate than a normal watch as well. The time to leave is sadly apparent. The last day or two it really hits that the city is really going back to whence it came. Most of us have probably had the dream that everyone just stays, but sadly it has not happened yet in this world.

As an Air Force kid, (Dad was the Academy LO for SW Michigan) I had 24 hour time AND the International Phonetic Alphabet....and lots of o.d. green PX pants with blue web belts. It amazes me how difficult it is for the "uninitiated" to Add Twelve To It.

A.M. and P.M.
What is Noon and Midnight?
A.M. and P.M. start immediately after Midnight and Noon (Midday) respectively.

This means that 00:00 A.M. or 00:00 P.M. (or 12:00 A.M. and 12:00 P.M.) have no meaning.

Every day starts precisely at midnight and A.M. starts immediately after that point in time e.g. 00:00:01 A.M. (see also leap seconds)

To avoid confusion timetables, when scheduling around midnight, prefer to use either 23:59 or 00:01 to avoid confusion as to which day is being referred to.

It is after Noon that P.M. starts e.g. 00:00:01 PM (12:00:01)

Isn't that what I said? Seriously, because it's what I meant to say. And if thats not what people think I said, I can understand why there'd be confusion.

Anyway. . .

Burning man's confusion is caused by all the streets being in different time zones.
3:00 o'clock plaza
7:30 and so on.

probably could avoid some confusion if the announcements read something like: The gates will open 15 minutes after 11:45 p.m. Sunday night. But that would involve some mathematics. Or they could just say the Gates will open at 11:45 pm and then just faff around for 15 minutes before letting the stampede pass through

They could use the terms Noon and Midnight. One can only be mistaken for the other if you're some sort of arctic bat. I even use the term Noon Thirty. (Midnight thirty doesn't exist for me.)
But I'd go for Midnight:01 monday. Or 12:01 Monday morning. I guess. Maybe if I were Larry, i'd go for Noon Thirty.

That was one reason the Temple Guardian shifts were so wacky, too many folk couldn't tell 0300 Thursday from 0300 Friday.

When I was in the Air Force, _nothing_ was _ever_ scheduled to happen at midnight, because is was too confusing on what the date was. We all knew what 2359 12 OCT 1969 was, but when is 0000 12 OCT 1969? Is that right after 2359 11 OCT 1969? Or right before 0001 13 OCT 1969? So any event that was scheduled for first thing on 12 OCT 1969 was scheduled for 0001 12 OCT 1969. (And of course, all time in the Air Force was Z-time, so 0001 12 OCT 1969 was exactly the same time where ever in the world you were.)

The other issue for 12-hour tiime is that there's no such thing as 12:00 AM and 12:00 PM, given the definitions of AM and PM.

(Our clocks were hand-wound ship's chronometers, synched with WWV and wound at the same time every day, with a log of how far off the clock was from WWV. If it was out of sync by some amount, it was replaced and returned to base for adjustment. A big 00 at the top and 12 at the bottom, black face with white numbers; hour, minute, and sweep second hand.)
